Uitzendinggemist is fantastic for TV. I'm sure it includes some films, but I mainly use it to watch detective shows.

It's a great idea. I am in with Russian. I hope that by the end of the challenge I will master it, once and for all.

Sounds like fun way to revise French or German (or both).

I often have the subtitles when I watch a film on my own - often in a language I am not terribly familiar with.

I'd need to include podcasts as I spend (at least) 3 hours a day in the car for the next few months.

Well, I'll wait and see what we decide about podcasts before making a final decision on language. If we're counting podcasts under films, it might not be that hard to find free materials for Yiddish. I'm not sure podcasts are really comparable, though.

WOW! You guys are the best! Here I was happy that one person wanted to join me, and before I get home from work we were a whole bunch!

I want to make this as accessible as possible, so yes, if someone wants to read non fiction, that is fine. A book is a book. I would think a textbook would be more trouble to get through than a novel, but we all have different tastes.

With paralell texts you just have to see how many pages are in your target language. Less than 100 pages = half a book. More than 100 pages counts as a full book. More than 500 counts as two books.

As for manga I am totally out of my depth. How many mangas would those of you who know manga be able to read in the same time as you read a book which had between 100-500 pages? 4,5,10?

For TV shows, anything under 45 minutes counts as half a film.

As for podcasts and audiobooks I would suggest that we count them as films - they are both listening practise. A normal film is around 1 hour and a half, so the equivalent in podcasts would qualify. I'll amend the rules :-)

I am going to Spain tomorrow, and will be away for a week, and I do not know if I will have any internet access. Therefore I pray for your indulgence if questions come up while I am away that I do answer until next Thursday. I thought I might get two or three willing souls within the first week of suggesting this!

Perhaps I could ask ReneeMona to use her best judgement and answer for me if anyone gets impatient?

Excellent idea! It'll at least force me to do some actual reading/watching movies. Probably I'll go with Belarusian (although finding 100 movies might be difficult)

By the way, are we going to use a twitter bot in order to register our progress?
