I'm probably in for Hungarian, although I think the 100 books will be way too many for me in that time, because most of my reading time is spent on other, higher level languages.

Is it possible to watch more films to take my overall total up to 200? Or could there be separate tables for just books and just films?

I'm not trying to cause problems, I just want to be in it and have a realistic chance of actually managing it.

Well, since it is possible to run a half marathon, I do not see why it should not be possible to do a half Super challenge? You could enter with just films.

The point here is just to challenge ourselves to read and see/listen to way more than we usually do - just like the other challenges. So even if you enter with both films and books, and you read 20 books in your TL and not 4 like you normally would have done, that is still sucess as far as I am concerned. I just thought I would try the "aim for the stars" approach, since I have seen how enormously beneficial the 6WC and the Tadoko challenges have been for me.
Okay thanks. So I'll officially enter for both and see where that takes me.

Great idea by the way!

Wow! Sounds wonderful and I'm definitely in, but not sure with which language :D
Do football matches count? :) (they're 90 mins) What about LR?
I suppose the most logical choice for me would be Portuguese, but I kinda want to do Italian or even Polish, Danish, good old German... why the "just one language" rule? :P

I suggest counting TL subtitles as reading, like for Tadoku. otherwise it's theoretically possible to watch 100 "films" without ever hearing your TL. how is that gonna help your listening comprehension? :D

Football matches definitely count, provided there actually is a decent amount of talking, and not just grunting while they kick the ball around :-) I must admit that my experience with fotball matches is extremely limited, bordering on non existant, but there usually is some very talkative guy commenting, right?

As for counting films with subtitles as books, you are right that in principle that would make more sense, but for simplicity's sake, I think we just stick to having films as films, whether they are in target language or just with TL subtitles.

The reason why I wanted to make it count was because it may be difficult, bordering on impossible for some of us to get sufficient films in the target language, and I am sure that people will chose films in TL if they can.

90 minutes of LR could count as a film, just like audiobooks and podcasts - or you could chose to have it as part of a book. If it is a book you are reading. If it is just short texts I throw in the towel :-).

This is an amazing idea! Count me in with Japanese. 100 films (or 200 TV shows) should be reasonably easy to fulfill but 5 books a month? That's going to be tough but I bet even attempting it will help me bridge the gap between B1 and B2. I'm looking forward to it!

I want to do this. And without manga. *_*

yes, pretty much always :D so a full match is one "film"?

BTW if a book has like 75-99 pages, can I just reread the needed number of pages and count it as one book?

So it looks like the "easy" part of SuperChallenge(TM) is essentially equal to 100 units of 90 (or more) minutes of
listening to the TL, for about 150 hours, or in practice likely more like 200 hours, making for a rate of 10 hours per
month.

How long do people expect to need to finish a book in a TL where you are probably about B1 for reading (I think by
definition you can't really read a book if your reading skills aren't at least around B1). In theory, "understanding
contemporary literary prose" falls under B2, but I assume we're all going to be stretching and using a lot of
dictionaries, L-R, and reading translations that we've read in other languages already for the first bit.

I'd assume a minimum of 1 minute per page (very fast, and probably only towards the end of the challenge) and a
maximum of 10 minutes per page (very slow, and probably only towards the beginning when it's still hard to read
for at least gist without a dictionary). If we assume it averages out to 3-4 minutes per page overall, at 200 pages a
book (seems average to me), we're talking 10-12 hours for a book, or 1000-1200 hours reading =

50-60 hours per month.

I think that's possible, but a bit of a stretch. Getting it down to 1 minute a page overall and assuming only 100
pages per book gives us a much more practical 10,000 minutes total = 500 minutes per month =

8.5 hours per month.

Food for thought. That's what makes it the "Super" Challenge!

LR doesn't really do any stretching other than forcing you to read faster, without necessarily understanding. And with these additional tools it's possible to read even at A1 :P
Also, there's nothing wrong with children's books and graded readers:)

Would AJATT-style reading be ok? Basically just reading randomly, not in the "correct" order. I'm thinking of doing a proper challenge in Italian and random in German.
