Sitting in a Spanish bar somewhere along the coast of Andalucia, I would just like to be very clear that I did
not come up with this challenge to divert attention from the other two challenges. I LOVE both of them, and I intend to participate very actively. That is why I planned it so that they could both be incorporated in the Super challenge. I just decided for myself that I wanted to do this, and I am super exited that there are others who will join me. But this particular challenge is not for the faint of heart. Even half a Super challenge is quite a feat. Most will find it too hard - but you would be most welcome as support and to cheer us on. This is what we call " a hairy goal" which means that it is supposed to be tough. However there is no shame in trying and giving up, or in being realistic enough to see that it is unrealistic for you :-) 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

Of course I've read it. You might as well say "you can also not do the challenge" and that would be just as true. :) I'm not a "aim the stars, you might land on the moon" kind of person unfortunately. I aim for realistic (they can be hard, but still realistic) goals and attain them. But for this one, I would simply need to spend all my free time for almost two years reading books in a language I'm not good at: I know I cannot do it, not even with a language I'm well over B1 like Mandarin.
Oh, I didn't imply that you were an evil being trying to divert us from studying! I just say how I feel about it: enthusiasm drives me to WANT to do it, but then I realise I simply cannot. Saying that, you mention that you thought of it for yourself, and I totally respect that: it's merely seeing everyone jumping into it which makes me feel "not being part of the fun". I don't know about the French dubbing, but the Spanish dubbing on Buffy is pretty good. In a few places they messed up on some of the slang because they misinterpreted the English, but as a general rule the dubbing was good. (E.g. Archaic teenage slang "I gotta book." meaning "I have to leave." (presumably a variation of "I've got to boogie.") got translated to Spanish as "I need a book.") 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Yes, I saw that option, and I may still consider it. That would fit nicely into my studies at this point.
Well, I'm totally rooting for you! I actually do want a good hairy reading goal, but I need to be careful: Once I commit to something like this, I pretty much turn into a robot for the duration. That's normally a good thing, but it means that I have to be a little sensible when setting goals. Does anybody want to do a full set of movies with a smaller reading challenge? Maybe 25 books in 20 months? We could call it a 62.5% Super Challenge. :-) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I was thinking along those same lines, though I'm a little less reticent about signing up for something knowing that the target might be impossible. What really spoke to me about the S.C. was that it counts discrete units of accomplishment, namely films and books (see the fine print, of course), and not minutes per se. I have no interest in counting and publicly logging my minutes, for various reasons, primarily because I don't think I could provide a meaningful number. But I have no problem saying "I read book X," because either I did, or I didn't (though comprehension may vary wildly from case to case). Also, if we're competing in the same language as other people, we can compare books, movies, and TV shows for suggestions, comments, etc. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

This may not be your cup of tea, but I calculated yesterday, based on the page counts on amazon.com, that reading the complete Harry Potter series in French should count as about 12 books--counting 1000 page books as 4 books, e.g. Do that twice, and you're basically done. I think quite a few of us know someone who went through the whole series (albeit in L1) in less than a month... 1 person has voted this message useful |
