Don't feel bad about slacking off if you're still getting exposure through news and
movies. Getting a bunch of exposure definitely helps even if you don't seem to make as much tangible progress as when you study. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I wanted to wait a week to post again, in order to see whether my plan of using more regimented study would work...and it did! In the past week I studied about 14 hours, two each day, one hour in the morning and one at night. In each hour I watched one FIA episode and then worked on LingQ lessons for the remainder of the hour.

I love the sound of the Quebec accent, even though I find it tougher to understand. :-)

Me too. I found it tougher to understand at first until I realized I was comparing real life québécois French with the artificially clear French found in learning materials like Assimil. When compared to French movies however, it is no tougher, just takes getting used to after all that time spent listening to language courses which are all based on French speakers. Yeah, I have a cool Skype exchange partner with an accent like that, and she doesn't switch to metropolitan French the way many people do. After about 3 or 4 hours of exposure, I can understand maybe 40% of what she's saying. I've been reluctant to spend much time listening to the Quebec accent, though, because I'm an automatic mimic, and I normally need to speak European French. A couple of hours with Quebec French can really mess up my nasal vowels-it drags my nasal /ɑ/ halfway to /a/ and I start getting blank looks when I say "cinq cent" or "cent cinq". :-) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Wup wup.
Spent the past month moving to a new state and registering for school. Not much French learning done in that time, though I have still been watching movies and listening to radio. I'm trying to get a computer science degree inside of two years (with a lot of help from previous college credits), so I will be pretty busy. Four classes this semester: Computer Science I Physics Calculus III Discrete Mathematics Some good news: I got Assimil for my birthday! Started it yesterday, so I am on Lesson Two today. Just found this thread and I think it's a great idea.
Once you get a bit more advanced you should check out comedy clips on youtube, it's astonishing how much stuff there is to find. Right now I'm watching a full 2h show by Gad Elmaleh, he's one of the best known comedians. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Hi, thanks for commenting. I have actually tried watching Elmaleh in particular before (I had seen him in movies, so I YouTubed him), but could hardly understand a thing. So yes, definitely for a later date. :-)
