I studied language acquisition from a neuroscience and linguistics perspective when I specialised in artificial intelligence. At the time the community was divided with the Chomsky-ists and language modellers on one side, and the neural network pattern recognition fans on the other. I subscribed to the second camp and maybe this has skewed my approach to language learning.

However, I think the most important discipline for the future of language study is social psychology and its theories of motivation. We may learn more about the language acquisition process, but we really need to know what makes somebody dedicate themselves to learning a language. Social psychology could also help figure out what factors are demotivating and how to avoid them.

Hello!

I'd be interested in knowing the sources for your figures. Things like "human energies channeled into foreign languages can be estimated to be about 10% of total human energy output on the planet" seem completely unlikely to me, so perhaps sourcing these claims could be good.

Thanks in advance.
