Hi! I'm a student currently living in the US. I've lurked on this forum for several
years, but I'm hoping making a log will help me keep up my motivation over the summer.

Arabic
At my university, I'm a Middle Eastern Studies and Religious Studies major and study
Arabic. Two weeks ago I returned to the US after almost four months of study in Jordan.
I took 16 credit hours in Arabic, which was really overwhelming but my Arabic improved
a lot. (When I first arrived I could barely string a sentence together, despite a year
and a half of study, and when I left I felt I could comfortably get around doing almost
anything I needed in Arabic). I am still very far from anything resembling fluency in
Arabic and will continue to study MSA in my last year of school, which begins in the
fall. I also hope to maintain the Levantine dialect I picked up and (hopefully!) build
on that. I plan to review grammar and vocab I learned last semester over the summer and
focus on improving my Arabic more in the fall when school starts again. We used Al
Kitaab, so I'll be focusing on reviewing vocabulary from that.

German
In just ten days, I'll be joining my boyfriend in Berlin for the summer! I lived in
Germany for a few years as a child but never learned any German. Since I'll be there
for a month and a half, I want to see if I can pick up some German and continue to
self-study once I'm back in the US. Right now I have Pimsleur, Living Language, and
Assimil to use. I'm going to do my best to go through one lesson of each every day
before I arrive. My boyfriend (who's fluent and speaks German at home with his mom in
the US) is willing to help me practice as well.

Here's what I've been able to do the past week or so. I visited some friends in another
city for a few days, so it's been pretty pathetic. I'm home till I leave now and I'm
hoping to stick to my schedule better :)

Well I've been in Berlin now for more than a week and haven't studied any German! I'm
hoping now that I've gotten a handle on my internship and my schedule here that I'll get
back into a decent routine. I have been practicing a tiny bit with my boyfriend. He
teaches me new words a lot and I have a notebook now to carry around to write them down
in.

I've been having some major computer troubles this summer and haven't been able to access my Pimsleur
lessons on iTunes, Anki Deck or my Living Language CD (because it's in my dead computer). I decided to try to
study today using some free materials online. I thought the DW Warum Nicht? series was way too easy for me and
had way more English than necessary but decided to go through the first few chapters because they're so short.
I'm not sure if I'll continue or not. I also tried DW's Deutsch Interaktiv course, which I really liked. I'll definitely
continue this course.
