Does anyone know of any good authors/titles that are in French, just not by authors from France? I know of Amelie Nothomb from Belgium, but that's about it.

oh, wow, never thought of asking that here myself ...
I don't like reading "Standard" french, it kinda hurts my eyes. So I'd also be grateful for recommendations of Quebecois authors (who actually write in Quebecois) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I suggest you look for something of interest on this site:
Renaud-Bray.com I have ordered many books from them, kind of like the amazon.com of Québec. A true Québec classic are the books by Michel Tremblay like: "Les Belles-Soeurs" "La Grosse femme d'à côté est enceinte" "C't'à ton tour, Laura Cadieux" They may be a bit difficult to understand however. Les Belles-Soeurs was published in 1968 and marked the first time Québec literature embraced with pride the québécois slang (le joual). If you want a more recent Québec author in the style of Stephen King try Patrick Senécal. I have not read any of his books but I would like to as I have heard good things about them plus an interview with him on the CBC podcast "C'est la vie". They are also likely an easier read than Michel Tremblay. Some books I have read some of and recommend are the bande-dessinée books of Michel Rabagliati : "Paul à la campagne" "Paul a un travail d'été" "Paul en appartement" "Paul dans le métro" "Paul à Québec" and several others. The blog englishimmersionfrançaise may be useful. It is a blog created by two language partners, one Québécois and one English Ontarian who recommend books to each other and review them on this blog. There are lots of great Quebecois authors:
Gabrielle Roy (if you read "Bonheur d'occasion" you will encounter lots of colloquialisms in the dialogues) Jacques Poulin ("Volkswagen Blues" could be a good novel to start with) Yves Thériault ("Agaguk" is a very easy and captivating read, with lots of dialogues) Michel Tremblay (I would recommend "Un ange cornu avec des ailes de tôle") Je laisse les autres poursuivre la liste! 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Thats why I recommend the 'Paul' series of books. Virtually all of the text is colloquial spoken québécois French and with pictures to help so it may provide some help regarding the joual of Michel Tremblay. Also useful would be the blog offqc.com. I met Tremblay at "Le salon du livre de Montréal" but couldn't think of anything to say to him other than thanks for signing a copy of one of his books as I had not at the time read any of them. I wanted to read some French African writing for the super challenge so I looked up some authors and ordered some books. I haven't received them yet, so I can't say whether they're good, but they do seem to be about political or social issues mostly, which makes sense. What I did was check the wikipedia article for African literature, find the ones that wrote in French, opened their pages and then looked at the lists of works and picked some that sounded good/were available on amazon.
