"Fetch, Pharoah, fetch!" (image by Barcex, source: Wikipedia) This is a baggage-light blog on learning Middle Egyptian hieroglyphics in little nibble-sized nighttime sessions. I've always been fascinated with ancient Egypt, and think understanding past civilisations provides us with a better perspective on contemporary culture. Therefore I can't wait to travel back through time to connect with a civilisation that thrived over 5,000 years ago. I'll leave Assimil's "L'Égyptien hiéroglyphique" and a small French dictionary on my bedside table, and try to study at least 5-10 minutes before going to sleep each night. I might also try and go through Collier and Manley's "How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs" for some bonus practice later, if the mood takes me. The goal is to be able to read all the texts included in Assimil with relative ease by the end of the course, and thereby reach an intermediate level where I can walk into a museum and understand the gist of inscriptions written in Egpytian hieroglyphics. It would also be good fun to watch films and series like "Stargate" and "The Mummy" again and actually recognise some of the reconstructed dialogue used. Carry on Cleo: Week 1
Total hours of study so far: 1 (Assimil's "L'Égyptien hiéroglyphique", 4/101 chapters started, 0 completed) I haven't got as far as sentences yet and am simply enjoying learning some basic signs and their pronunciation at this point. Wow! It's great to have company with this very fun language.
My company of Assimil is 3 weeks overdue, and Amazon.fr just resent it for me as an express shipment. I've been creating some useful resources: - An Anki 2 deck with 204 common hieroglyphs. I've learned all ~120 phonetic characters. - An Anki 2 deck with the 12 first lessons of Assimil. I'll be adding to this as I go. - A PDF with the phonetic characters. - A plugin for entering hieroglyphs in Anki 2. Some assembly required. - Linux-specific tools for typing hieroglyphs and transliteration characters. Any or all of these are available for the asking. I'm already following your log with keen interest (both in French and Egyptian), and am delighted to share this time-travel journey with another member of the forum! I've had this wonderful little Assimil course sitting in my cupboard for a while now, and much like some ancient Pharoah's treasure chamber, it's long due a good airing. I also created an Anki deck a couple of years ago with about 80 signs using Hieroglyphs Hierowriter, taken from Collier & Manley's "How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs". However these were sadly lost when my old macbook died beyond any hope of resurrection in The Book of the iDead. At the moment I'm just reading through the chapters several times in the hope that something will finally stick. And already I'm noticing a strong similarity to Arabic words, and wouldn't be surprised if this extends to many other languages as I venture further in. I didn't realise there were around 120 phonetic characters altogether, as I've only learned the basic ones off so far, and any consonant clusters as and when they appear in each chapter. So I'd be really interested in taking a peak at your Anki decks, if you don't mind sharing further. :) Wishing you strong ka in your studies! There's more than 120 phonetic signs, certainly. But there's a really useful core of signs that fits on a single page, according to akkadboy. When I look at a randomly- selected page of Assimil, I can give you either a pronunciation or a set of meanings for a large majority of characters. And a lot of the unknown characters seem to be determinatives, most of which are easy to learn in context. Anyway, for a copy of my decks, you'll need Anki 2. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a download link with some good stuff.

Total hours of study so far: 5 (Assimil’s “L’Égyptien hiéroglyphique”, 12/101 chapters started, 7 completed) I’ve started reading simple sentences and have spent a lot of time reviewing earlier lessons this week. The verdict’s still out on establishing a suitable review strategy, especially as I usually skip a couple of nights during the week, but on the positive side, reading hieroglyphics in bed is a great cure for insomnia (lol). Check your PM for a link to some Anki 2 decks that may help with your reviews. There's
the deck of 204 basic signs, and 14 lessons worth of Assimil reviews (which is all I've taken the time to type in so far). If anybody else wants a copy, PM me. It looks like Assimil takes the gloves off around lesson 12 or 13. Lesson 14 is a huge data-dump of a review. After that it looks like a few days of steady progress. It's a nice course, and I'm really digging the grammar. All this "mk" and "iw" and "iw- wn" and "im" stuff is pleasantly mind-expanding. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
