I agree with Professor Arguelles comment regarding the dryness of Hugo. And for lack of a better way of classifying the course, I see it as a high level overview. It may be for those reasons that, I think it contrasts and complements Assimil. I also have the complete version, but have thus far only completed the French in 3 Months book. Due partly to the April Challenge, I did it very quickly. Probably too quickly, given my level at the time. But I know that I did get value from it. It may be mostly review for you, luke. Enjoy.

Merci bien, monsieur. J'ai vu que vous avez écrit NSF chez polydog. Qu'est-ce que c'est NSF? I reviewed Hugo lesson 1 advanced this evening and also did week 1 from 3 months. Even week one from French in 3 Months taught me a few words and helped me focus on some written details. I think it will be a nice complement to the other stuff I've been doing. I also listen/read La Belle et la Bête , which was mentioned in the http://www.ladictee.fr/ Conseils de livres pour les élèves de 6ème category. Course overload is setting in. I'm looking forward to the "back to front" feature I'm using for French Without Toil (FWT) and New French with Ease to kick in.
Goals: Less time with courses. Vary methods to learn material at a deeper level. Random thoughts this morning... Do one Assimil intensive, and another extensive. (currently I'm doing 3 fairly intensive). The idea here is to make progress and incorporate review. An extensive track can be 5-10 minutes and one completes the track in just a few weeks. One thought was doing FWT in the prescribed manner. Listen, look away and repeat, a formal "wave 2" translation. Early lessons could be completed a few per day. Just do the look away and repeat starting with where I'm at today in the courses. Add tricky words to Anki. Perhaps do this in a trailing back to front wave. E.G. FWT current lesson 91 done intensively. FTW trailing wave 140. Read/look away and repeat Possibly a third trailing back to front wave doing translation. I listened a bit to Germinal by Zola from http://www.litteratureaudio.com/livre-audio-gratuit-mp3/zola -emile-germinal.html and that sort of non-study activity is tempting. Other random thoughts. Have an intuitive track (Assimil), Grammar track (Hugo), Doing track (FSI), and an extensive track. Right now I've just got too many courses going. It's nice to finish a trip through before changing course, which brings me to... Hugo - I've done a fairly quick first pass at the first 3 (of 9) chapters of the Advanced course. It does seem helpful. I've also done the first 3 (of 12) weeks in the 3 months course. The written exercises there also seem helpful. Doing an advanced lesson and a week from the 3 months course in a single day along with the three Assimil tracks and FSI was manageable (and there was an end in sight) when my wife was out of town and I was working more from home. For normal times, that's too much, as my escape to this log indicates. Back to the grind. Business French review wave is on lessons 16/17 (of 40). FWT was lesson 112, being a review lesson meant listen/reading the previous 6, as well as the trailing 7. NFWE will be on lesson 98 today. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

Have you given thought to doing extensive watching of a series of French shows? I've read opinions in various threads where the author advocates extensive input. Also I've seen emk mention doing massive input with the Buffy series, in his log. My understanding is that it works best with a series that has accurate French transcriptions. Also, a show that uses a lot of common every day language may be most helpful. I'll be going down this road, after I empty my current queue, so maybe in a couple months. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
