"omdat hij het hebben wil" is not the standard word order, but certainly correct in a lot
of circumstances. Dutch worder is rigid but not that rigid ;)

"Hij bestelt een bord soep, omdat hij het wil eten" is a neutral word order, but if you
say:

"Hij bestelt een bord soep, omdat hij het eten wil" - you're emphasizing the eating of
the soup (as opposed to drinking, throwing it against the wall and whatnot).

Thanks a lot! It's good to know such sentences are not incorrect, even though they may
have a different emphasis. Now I should remember the right word order much better (I did
visualize throwing the plate against the wall ;)).

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly: would you or wouldn't you be surprised?

I would be surprised, i.e. I don't think they will interfere. (You mentioned a
long time back now, that you were slightly afraid they would).

But I was also "covering my bases", and saying that I'm (always) prepared to be proved
wrong! Don't worry; just the equivocal Englishman equivocating. :-)

The sentence you got was the general rule, so remember to use that first. Once you've got
it down pat, juggle with it, Hekje-style, and you'll be fine ;) (she has a great link to
solve all your word order questions in Dutch).

Did someone summon me? x-D

Julie, I apologize if this is something you've already seen, but I found
DutchGrammar.Com to be the best and most comprehensive resource on word order.
Once you get through the basics you will know everything.

As a side note - "omdat" is one of those subordinating conjunctions, which means the
clauses it creates get all their verbs flipped to the end. Relative pronouns also
trigger the same word order. The good news is that, after you master this one new
pattern, there really isn't anything about word order that should greatly surprise you.
So-called "advanced" word order is really only about moving out small chunks of the
sentence for emphasis and legibility.

It's really wonderful to be able to read your reflections here! Keep on keepin'
on. :-)

@Serpent: thanks for the hint. I was once disappointed to find no Swedish songs on
lyricstraining.com so I didn't even think Dutch ones might be there. Now I have to give
it a try.

@montmorency: This is a great proof for how afraid I am of interferences :). I thought
I must have understood something wrong whereas in fact I understood you perfectly :).

@tarvos: Thanks again! I hope word order won't be very difficult

@Hekje: Thank your for the link! I didn't know the website, and it seems great. The
Michel Thomas course has already included sentences with relative 'where', 'how' and
'how much'. The pattern itself is not all that difficult (I speak German which also has
this kind of word order) but all differences between Dutch and German (+ the fact the
course is in English) make it a bit more confusing.

I am glad to share all my reflections :). For the next week and a half there'll be
fewer of them (I'm going to Germany, as mentioned above) but I am enjoying Dutch more
and more :).

Interference isn't so bad. I sometimes end up writing Cyrillic instead of Latin, it just
happens, it's when your brain tries too switch too quickly from one related activity to
another. Just train it often enough and you'll be fine.
