They're quarreling? That's so close to the French "se livrer un duel" and I believe it's not liefern sich auf Akk, but rather the Duell part is very important...

That simply means they're having a duel, and is an idiomatic way of saying.

the collocation is "sich ein Duell liefern"
"auf offener Bühne" is just an adverbial phrase telling us where that happened
German word order makes it sometimes hard to identify which words belong together

Dies ist eigentlich kein besonderer Ausdruck. Man kann auch sehen, dass der Dativ und
nicht der Akkusativ der Präposition «auf» im Beispielsatz folgt. Also habe ich keine
Ahnung, warum du das so geschrieben hast.

Wenn man nur das Verb «liefern» betrachtet, bedeutet es so viel wie "schicken", "jm.
etw. zukommen lassen" bzw. eine Sache von Punkt A nach B bringen.

Das würde natürlich keinen Sinn in diesem Zusammenhang machen.

Wenn man jedoch im Deutschen «sich liefern» benutzt, wird es zur Darstellung von
Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Personen verwendet.

Zum Beispiel: sich einen Streit liefern, sich einen Schlacht liefern, sich eine
Diskussion liefern, usw.

Die Präposition «auf» wird lediglich benutzt, um eine allgemeine Lage zu beschreiben.
«Auf der Bühne» wird hier jedoch nicht bildlich benutzt, um auf die Existenz einer
angehobenen Plattform hinzudeuten. Es bedeuet lediglich «in der Öffentlichkeit».
