What are some good programs (whether online or software based) for learning Irish? I own
the Teach Yourself Complete Irish course, but have not really dipped my toe into it too far. I tried to start the course a while back, but I put it down for some reason, so I have very little experience with it. I came across one from RTE and one called Gaeltalk. I do plan on using the TY course but I also enjoy using a web-based course where you can log in and track your progress, making use of interactive content. I find I really take to those types of learning platforms but I also like to supplement that with learning material that I can take around with me, i.e., TY. I learned Irish in school so I never used a self teaching programme, but I have heard
good things about Learning Irish by Ó Siadhail. The impression I've gotten is that it's the best on the market at the moment, though very full on in terms of grammar (which might be a good thing if you're analytically inclined). The course Gaeilge gan Stró is the one I've been hearing good opinions of recently http://www.siopa.ie/leabhar.aspx?id=67&Lang=en
The author, Éamonn Ó Dónaill, has been behind many of the most popular (in Ireland) recent Irish language materials that aren't published by the Teach Yourself etc people. One plus I've heard mention of is that they tackle the multiple dialects issue up front and rather than stick to one dialect, they use speakers from all the major dialects. It is also used in several undergraduate level courses in Irish and correspondingly, the materials are definitely more expensive than the Teach Yourself type courses. They also have version available online that uses video.
