Hi all,

I am studying Mandarin right now. I just began module 2 of FSI. I just discovered the
DLI materials....I had no idea that they even existed. Has anyone tried the DLI course
for Mandarin (basic)? How did you like it? How does it compare to FSI in terms of
vocabulary, etc ?

Very, very similar.

The FSI course is actually a joint FSI/DLI project so you will find a great deal of overlap in the initial vocabulary.
One benefit to the DLI course is that it teaches writing from the beginning. So if characters are important to you,
you may be better off with the DLI course. Both are very monotonous and slow ( in true FSI/ DLI fashion). The DLI
course offers much less hand-holding so it may be better used in conjunction with a tutor. Of the two, I chose FSI
and I must admit, I only made it through Module 2 of the course before I gave up out of boredom!

Hey, Thanks for the insight!

I know that the Standard Chinese course by DLI is basically the same as FSI standard
Chinese....It appears that the Basic Chinese course is quite different. The first module
follows the same pattern as FSI, but after that it is completely different. I am
wondering if anyone has any experience with the Basic Chinese course.
