Course: O Francês sem esforço
Estimated Start Date: Probably by the end of november. It's gonna be a very busy time, with my finals coming... so it depends on that. Prior experience with this language: Basically none. A couple movies, and I recognize lots of words when reading. Any outside resources you might use: Movies, music. Why you chose this language: Well, I don't have many good reasons. I've only got two options: French or German, and I'm a bit scared of German right now... I think French will be a good language to have under my belt. It's not a lot of motivation, but having access to french-base Assimil should be nice. I might get interested in the language as soon as I begin Personal Predictions: I really hope for B1, since I have a solid knowledge of Italian and speak Portuguese natively. I'm gonna have a hard time trying to keep motivated, but I'll give it a shot. If I give up, I might change to German (Alemão sem esforço), which is a lot scarier but seems exciting. Course: Russian With Ease
Estimated Start Date: Nov 1 Prior experience with this language: Zero Any outside resources you might use: Nope Why you chose this language: It's in a different family from my other target languages Personal Predictions: Not sure. Probably High A1/A2 It seems like a good amount of people are doing Russian right now. I might do Danish since I don't see that listed. Course: Assimil New French WIth Ease
Estimated Start Date: November 1st Prior experience with this language: Perhaps 4 or 5 known words - yes, no, thanks etc. Any outside resources you might use: I gave Pimsleur which I might use to aid in my pronunciation becuase unfortunately I only have the Assimil book and not the CDs. I also have a Teach Yourself Complete French which I may skim through but by no means study it: actively or passively. With any language I like to use a small grammar book from Collins so I might use that for French. Why you chose this language: French, to me, has never been comprehensible and always appears as a sort-of mystery language. I do, however, really like the sound of French and would like to be able to understand French music and in particular French film (as I studied film at university.) Personal Predictions: I have never used an Assimil book before, I've always opted for Teach Yourself and have had great success using these. Course:Assimil Japanese with Ease Volume 1, 2007
Estimated Start Date: November 1st (previously intended to start January 1st) Prior experience with this language:None Any outside resources you might use: None - for sake of experiment, had previously intended to use Pimsleur, Rembering the Kanji, Anki but will hold off for 6 months and do Assimil exclusively to see how far it can take me. Why you chose this language:Trip to Japan in May 2014/Previous desire to learn Personal Predictions: Very difficult, but high A1/A2 with hope of B1 eventually, not likely during this 6 months. Only using Assimil Japanese volume one, or passive phase so not sure how far it will take me. I hope for a higher level after adding other materials later. If I finish Volume 1 during experiment, I will move on to level II. Other languages: Will continue working on Spanish throughout. Course: Le Vietnamien sans peine
Estimated Start Date: November 1st or so. Prior experience with this language: Very little. I looked at it briefly for a week or two but that's it. Any outside resources you might use: Dictionary. Why you chose this language: I really would like to learn it; always have. I've also never tried a tonal language before, so it should be interesting. Course: Dutch With Ease
Estimated Start Date: November 1 Prior experience with this language: Eight hours of Michel Thomas Total Dutch Any outside resources you might use: New Routledge Dutch Dictionary Essential Dutch Grammar 201 Dutch Verbs Why you chose this language: I can spend no more than 30 minutes a day on this project, so I decided to choose a language that is not very difficult for native English speakers. Dutch seemed to be an obvious choice, especially since I have also studied German. Zipping through Michel Thomas Total Dutch was the deciding factor, as that experience proved to me that Dutch can be a fun language to learn. Personal Predictions: By the end of the active wave, I expect to be able to read Dutch pretty well, and I hope to be able to have simple conversations in Dutch on a variety of topics. I believe that my greatest challenge will be to avoid burnout from working only with the Assimil book and cds for six months. I have done two other Assimil courses, French With Ease and Spanish With Ease, but did not complete the active wave of either course because I became bored with them and decided to move on to other materials. This time I am going to make an extra effort to stay fully engaged with Assimil by experimenting with different ways of keeping it fresh and interesting. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Course: Le Nouvel Espagnol Sans Peine
Estimated Start Date: mid-November (when I finish the intensive French review that I'm doing) Prior experience with this language: some self study with Spanish as a kid (20 years ago). I will be studying Spanish in my second language, French, just to add a little challenge. Any outside resources you might use: Dictionary; meetups Why you chose this language: Because of its utility and because I would like to do some travel in Central and South America.
