I'll be starting on October 29th and will be doing mainly Il nuovo Italiano senza sforzo, alternating it with the French edition (I have one only as an ebook and the other one also printed).

Course: Французский без труда сегодня (French With Ease).
Estimated Start Date: Hopefully November 1. Prior experience with this language: None. Any outside resources you might use: None, only Assimil for sake of experiment. Why you chose this language: No particular reason. Personal Predictions: I learned German with Assimil and didn't finish it (dropped like last 15 active wave lessons), it just got too boring to learn from textbook when I already was able to use real life materials (books, articles on Internet, podcasts etc.). So I won't be surprised if the same thing will happen with French too. But I will try to stick to "30..45 minutes a day every day" rule and will see what's happen. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

Estimated Start Date: November 5 Prior experience with this language: None Any outside resources you might use: Lingua Latina Why you chose this language: It's the language of the legendary Roman Empire. I don't have to say more. Course : le norvégien sans peine
Estimated start date : November 1 Prior experience with this language : I dabbled with Norwegian over a decade ago, but had plenty of time to forget almost everything since. Any outside ressources you might use : a dictionary. Why you chose this language : I fell in love with this language as a teenager Personal predictions : at least A2 , possibly a lower B1 if I stick to the end of the challenge. Course: El nuevo francés sin esfuerzo (French through Spanish base)
Estimated Start Date: 5th October (I know the experiment says November but I had already started using purely Assimil and saw this post so figured I'd join. I'll post my results one month earlier) Prior experience with this language: 1 year at school 15 years ago, all I can remember is how to count from 1-10, I was never engaged in the subject - what I now know to be due to me not enjoying the classroom environment for language learning. Any outside resources you might use: - Assimil French without Toil 1940 edition - Michel Thomas. I might listen to the first 8 Michel Thomas CDs which I found helpful for Spanish when I first started out. It´s only around 8 hours and is super basic so shouldn´t have too much of an impact. - Google. As I'm learning through Spanish, if I don't understand an explanation about some feature of the language I will google it. - I'm not planning on buying any other major resources. I think I went a bit overboard with Spanish and bought way more textbooks etc than I needed so I'm going to rein myself in this time and just focus on Assimil (Influenced a bit by Luca) Why you chose this language: - So far I've studied Japanese and Spanish (and Chinese briefly), languages that are all quite phonetic, French should be a nice challenge in that regard - As per Professor Arguelles's suggestion as per the order to learn the major European languages: Spanish, French, Italian, German - To better understand French philosophy and to have a 'philosophical' language to think in and use. - I want to travel to France next year - To be able to study from Perfectionnement Espagnol and then for possibly my next language Le Nouvel Italien sans peine Personal Predictions: - I imagine I'll be between A2-B1 - As I'll be learning it through Spanish I hope this will help to form a separate linguistic centre for French and prevent confusion between the two. I doesn't seem like the Cantonese course is out yet - I just checked the New Assimil programs thread, and found that the estimated time of arrival is "the end of 2013". I guess I'll have to wait.

Course: L'Allemand (2004) (German through French base)
Estimated Start Date: 3rd November Prior experience with this language: Almost zero. Any outside resources you might use: Nothing. I want to have a real experience with Assimil. Why you chose this language : Professional concerns. I'm a medical student and Germany is a great participant in medical researches. Personal Prediction : Hoping for B2, expecting B1. I had a look on its glossary and it contains about 2500 words, if they are really 'useful' words, I'm expecting to be a real B1.. Course: Il Francese Senza Sforzo (French through Italian base)
Estimated Start Date: 1st October. Not sure when I began TBH. Prior experience with this language: I've had French classes at school but I didn't really remember anything (it was 20 years ago!). It did help a little because I still had a vague idea of pronounciation; Any outside resources you might use: I finished Michel Thomas Foundation and Advanced both circa three months ago. I've been reading newspapers in French with consistency and exchanging e-mails with natives and learners alike ever since. I'd say I'd guess I'm an A2 by now - I can write quite decently and speak but my listening skills are terrible. That's what you get from learning French from a Polish teacher ;-) Why you chose this language: Spanish is undeniably more useful thse days and easier for Portuguese speakers - yet I'm not ready for it right now because I'm not fluent enough in Italian and couldn't help but mixing both up when I tried. I could have chosen to focus in Italian, of course, but my boyfriend is in the exact opposite situation (he speaks Spanish but not well enough). We wanted to learn something together so we chose a language that's middle ground between Italian and Spanish while still being a Romance language (which equals easier). Not that I don't love French, mind you. After all, what it loses in usefulness compared to Spanish it surpasses in beauty IMHO ;-) Personal Prediction : I'm seriously hoping for a B2, since it's not my only resource. I can't devote as much time as I wanted to it for now though, so I won't be sad if I achieve a B1. Other Languages: I have plans of doing German With Ease afterwards.
