Course: Le Persan
Estimated Start Date: Likely, I will start on November 1st (Maybe some days before). Prior experience with this language: None at all. Any outside resources you might use: Perhaps some youtube videos for checking my progress. Why you chose this language: My family have some acquaintances that are Farsi native speakers with whom I may practice. I wanted to start since long ago in the arab style writing system too, so this is a good chance for it. Personal Predictions: I am pretty curious about how far the course will take me because I have been using Assimil only for western languages (German and English). Change of plans for me!! So if you could, take off my registration for Le Hindi sans
peine. I'll instead be doing Norwegian! And my start date will be a bit different. The reason for changing is that I read that the Hindi Assimil is not really good (should have guessed : 50 lessons only) and my motivation for Norwegian spurt those past few weeks. Course: Le norvégien sans peine Estimated Start Date: First or second week of November. Maybe third if I realize I really am motivated for the 6w challenge. Prior experience with this language: None at all. Heard a few friends speak it a bit. Any outside resources you might use: Maybe try to read on Facebook a bit what my friends may write in Norwegian. I guess around the end, I could be starting to write on Lang-8 too. Why you chose this language: Curiosity, Read (thanks Vermillion ^^) goods comments about it this Assimil. And most of all, I'd like to see a bit how's a nordic (Scandinavian?) language. Personal Predictions: I hope to read a good B1. I guess it will be difficult to come back to a language which is not Asian. Course: Spanish with Ease
Estimated Start Date: 5/November Prior experience with this language: started learning it a number of times (I understand bits thanks to Italian)but never got further than 3-4 lessons. Any outside resources you might use: youtube, music lyrics Why you chose this language: I just spent a month working in Spain where I felt really frustrated having to use English all the time. Besides,the language has been on my list for a long time anyways Personal Predictions: understanding will come quickly, but I am usually quite lazy when it comes to learning vocabulary. Course Le Turc Sans Peine (2nd ed. - 1992)
Start 1st November Prior Experience none, outside if hearing it in the Kebab-shop Other Resources Listening to native materials, otherwise none. Why Turkish has always been on my list of languages to learn if I had unlimited time. Still I never got around to it, and it's not a priority, which should help to keep true to the experiment part. While it interests me it is, at the moment, not important enough to feel the need for intensive study (so i should be able to stay clear of non-assimil textbooks). I want to see if assimil provides me with a basis I can use to build on once I've worked through it. Expectations While I find the method good for romance/germanic languages I've never tried it with non-IE languages, so I'm not really sure what to expect. I hope to at least understand basic sentences, but we'll see where it takes me. Others My French is good enough to use the French based materials, but my quest for activating my passive knowledge is seemingly endless. And German needs to be learned also. I vowed to stay away from anything Roman/Germanic untill I'm comfortable with the big two (from a European standpoint). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Course Le Yiddish
Start 1st November Prior Experience Some basic German and a knowledge of the Hebrew alphabet Other Resources listening to podcasts, simple reading materials, and an easy self-learner - Der Yidisher Lerer. Why Cultural reasons. Expectations I have set the bar pretty low for myself. I would like to be able to read some kid's books or simple stories by the end. Others I am doing Chinese (Mandarin) for the 6WC in preparation for a possible trip in 2014.
