I've been learning Spanish for over 4 years and I'm going through FSI basic now:) I
started it when I discovered it (about 6 months ago,) and I'm on Unit 41 now. I could
have gone through it quicker, but I've spent time away from it here and there.
The thing is, maybe that's one way to do it, as I've never found it a hard slog, nor
have I needed to use the text or repeat lessons to get at least 90% accuracy in my
responses. It hasn't been so easy that it's boring, either. I just go through the
audio once, and while it hasn't been terribly difficult, it definitely has been
tremendously helpful in improving the fluidity and automaticity of my speech.
I did recently start doing a simultaneous review of the earlier audios starting from
Vol. 2, just in case. Right now I'm on Unit 29 for review, as well as 41 for the first
time. The review lessons so far have really seemed easy, not only in terms of
vocabulary and grammar, but in terms of being able to orally keep up with them. I'd say
I'm going through them with at least 98% accuracy, which I think shows that the 1st
wave did accomplish something, even though I'm past the point where I imagine many
would say I shouldn't be using a course. Probably I could have benefited from it even
more earlier on, but I didn't know about it.
Anyway, this has been my long-winded way of telling the OP that he can always go back
to FSI in a year (or even 2 or 3) and still get something out of it.
