I came across a couple of old posts like this while searching the forum earlier, and I thought it would be interesting to bring it up again.

So, which language do you think is the most beautiful in the world?

Of course, beauty can be many things - the way the language sounds is perhaps the most obvious interpretation, but perhaps the way it looks in writing is also important to some of you? Oh, and how about the way it expresses things? Some languages have very interesting ways of formulating thoughts and ideas, and what is just words to most people could be a work of art to someone else.

I'm just throwing ideas around, just to remind you that "beautiful" can be hard to define, However, I'm still sure we all have our favorites?

Which language would you vote for?

What's yours? I notice you haven't offered one up as your favorite.

No, because I wanted to keep the first post "clean" and not appear as if I was trying to "lean" the poll in a certain direction. I was going to vote after a few more people had casted their votes first.

But now that you ask: It's Czech. I love the way it sounds and the way it is written, with all the diacritics.

Your turn, now?

Which is the most beautiful man or woman?

To you, the one (or ones) you have chosen, I hope for you. The same with languages ...

PS. But sometimes language learning it is more like "the taming of the shrew" ;-)

My tastes change as I am exposed to more languages.

I used to think that Polish was quite harsh sounding, until I started to study it. I
find it quite pleasant now.

I used to think that Dutch was also a really harsh sounding language, until I got some
exposure to Afrikaans and learned to listen a bit more carefully to some of the
differences between the two.

I used to think that Ojibwe was an incredibly beautiful, melodic language. I still do,
actually, but as my exposure to the language has increased, the "specialness", for lack
of a better word, has decreased.

I will probably always consider Spanish to be "my" most beautiful language, because it
was my first foreign language and I can express myself best in it.

The topic is so subjective that the only valid answer is your own personal one. That's
why I brought up the fact that you hadn't mentioned your own favorite.

There are two moments when a language seems to me to be the most beautiful language in the world. First, when I'm just starting to understand it. Second, any time it is used to express a genuine emotion. In other words, any language has the potential to be the most beautiful language.

Italian, Finnish, Russian, perhaps.

Strongly vocalic languages like Swahili, the Polynesian languages, and Amerndian languages like Cherokee and Ojibwe sound very pleasantly, but give a somewhat monotone impression in the long run.

See here, here, and here for this small chestnut of a discussion.

The most beautiful for me:

Hungarian.

With all due respect to the Czech boosters, I love hearing Slovak. While I do agree with the comment on Czech girls as I had seen quite a few fine specimens in Olomouc, I'm partial to Hungarian ones. :-)

Those views still stand :-)
