Here are some books which deal with the Scandinavian languages as a whole:

English

Introduction to the Scandinavian Languages. (The Language Library). Walshe, M. O’C. London: Andre Deutsch, 1965. [Excellent survey, first such book I read].

The Scandinavian Languages. An Introduction to their History. Haugen, E. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1976. ISBN: 0-674-79002-2. [In-depth, near comprehensive diachronical survey. But note that the German edition (below) contains more and newer info].

The Nordic Languages - Their Status and Interrelations. Vikør, L.S. Oslo: Novus Forlag, 1995. (Nordisk Språksekretariat, Oslo, Publ. 14). ISBN: 82-7099-230-5. [Modern, but not an overall general survey if I remember correctly].

German

Die skandinavischen Sprachen. Eine Einführung in ihre Geschichte. Haugen, E. aus d. Engl. v. Pétursson, M. Hamburg: Helmut Buske Verlag, 1984. ISBN 3-87548-092-9. [As Haugen (above), but newer and better].

Die skandinavischen Sprachen im Überblick. Braunmüller, K. Tübingen: Francke Verlag, 1991. ISBN: 3-7720-1694-4. [An excellent overall survey, quite technical in places].

Nordistik. Einführung in die skandinavischen Studien. Durand, F. München: Carl Friedrich von Siemens Stiftung, 1978.

Scandinavian

Nordiska: Våra språk förr och nu. Barðdal, J. et al. Lund: Studentlitteratur, 1997. ISBN: 91-44-48251-5. [A modern survey; however, not without its faults].

De Nordiska Språken. Wessén, E. (Stockholm Studies in Scandinavian Philology 16). 5:e upplagan, Stockholm: Filologiska Föreningen vid Stockholms Högskola, 1957. [A classic. A bit dated now but still a fine survey].

De Nordiske Språk. Braunmüller, K. Oslo: Novus Forlag, 2. utgave, 1998. ISBN: 82-7099-303-4. [Norwegian version of Braunmüller (above)].

Nordens språk. Allan Karker, Birgitta Lindgren og Ståle Løland (eds.). Oslo: Novus Forlag, 1997. ISBN 82-7099-274-7. [A very readable and quite modern survey].

Nordiske språk i nordisk og Germansk perspektiv. Torp, Arne. Oslo: Novus Forlag, 1998. ISBN: 82-7099-298-4. [Compares Nordic languages to other Germanic languages, among other things.]

Other fine books

Likt och olikt i de Skandinaviska Språken. Bergman, G. Foreningarna Nordens Förbund, 3, upplagan, 1971. (Distrib.: Rabén & Sjögren). [Handy for getting an overview of the differences between the 3 languages].

Norstedts skandinaviska ordbok. Berglund, B-M. (ed.). Stockholm: Norstedts, 2002. ISBN: 978-91-7227-306-1. [3-way dictionary. Serves the basic words of the 3 languages; good for getting a pan-Scandinavian view of the vocabulary and the differences among the three].

The Oxford Book of Scandinavian Verse. XVII-XX centuries. Gosse, E. and Craigie, W.A. (eds.). Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1925. [This book is really sexy! :)]

Grenzgänge: Skandinavisch-deutsche Nachbarschaften. Detering, H. (Hrsg.). Göttingen: Wallstein Verlag, 1996. ISBN 3-89244-249-5.

Note that for Wessén, De Nordiska Språken, there is a 7th edition from 1965.

Hey, I've got that book. It really is excellent!

Thanks for making that list. It looks like many interesting reads... :)
