May I encourage people to head over to the TAC 2012
voting thread, and to vote? If I could repeat some of what I said there: Even if you haven't been following many logs throughout the year, you could - since we now have most of the links of finishers handily gathered in that thread - perhaps scan some of the ones you've missed? (I use the "Printable version" link at the bottom of the page for quick scanning.) Those logs for your respective target languages would of course be likely to be of the most immediate use, but reading logs for languages you're not studying can also be both very inspiring and useful, with respect to general study techniques/challenges. Some of the best are outstanding examples of both language-learning and log-keeping. (Cross posted to my other team thread, Schnitzel.) 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Apologies for my lack of activity so far this year. I was away for the first week and then came back to start of term exams last Friday. Since then I've been rather swamped with new term things and a seemingly infinite to do list, but I will get around to catching up on all your logs, I promise!

Word discovery of the week:
I recently posted a piece on my log post 142, which included my happy discovery of the French word for "shower-head" : pomme de douche, literally "apple of the shower", to which Quique replied,
And it led me to wonder: what is this object called in other Romance languages? And what other weird and wonderful names might there be for any other commonplace household (or otherwise) objects? Have you come across any terms which have made you similarly laugh in delighted recognition, nodding in agreement; startled or amused you, or just tickled your fancy? One little activity which I invite other Pax members to also try:
My vocab list is at post 157, for anyone else who's doing French. Feel free to snaffle it for your Anki lists etc if you wish. - Haven't changed my computer to French yet, though. (Baby steps...) I changed my iphone to French. So far it's been really, really irritating! I recently
discovered that, when Siri asks "Que puis-je faire pur vous?" there's a little "i" I can hit for information, and that gives me possible commands. The strangest part is that I need to pronounce my friend's names with a super exaggerated French accent for Siri to understand me. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I wish I could change my phone but it only does Korean and English.
I changed chrome to French and was thinking about changing Windows 7 to French but too scared too...especially as I don't have a premium version 1 person has voted this message useful |
