Kanewai's Intro
We're here, we're just being very quiet ... I made my first Turkish entry here (message 197): log. I'm currently working through Pimsleur. So far it's been pleasant, though I get lazy on the endings if I'm not focused enough. The language is regular enough that Pimsleur + Turkish seems like a good fit. I studied Turkish with Teach Yourself in 2005, in preparation for a 22 day solo trip (Selçuk, Fethiye, Antalya, Göreme, and İstanbul). It was the first new language I had studied in over a decade, and it went really well. By the time I made it to Antalya I was spending most of my time with local guys rather than tourists. It was also one of the most amazing trips I've taken. I had a three-day layover in İstanbul in 2007, and went back for another epic solo trip in 2010 (İstanbul, Mardin, Savur, Hasankeyf, Şanlıurfa, and Antakya). I looked through my language books, but didn't really study. I was hoping that it would just magically come back, and that I could pick up where I left off in 2005. That didn't happen, and I was in a region with almost no tourism and almost no English. It was a challenge, and I learned my lesson well: there ain't no magic in this world, just sweat and hard work. So here I am today - I'm heading to İstanbul for a week at the end of March with a group of friends, and this time I intend to study properly. Nice post kanewai. I have also been listening to pimsleur, and so far it's easy to understand and remember. My textbook is TY (1989), a book by Lewis. I am still at unit 1 (after the introduction units that is), and I take it slow. But it covers so much material I believe it's an excellent introduction for a beginner.

Is the TY (1999) book the one that starts off with Ekmek varmı? (Do you have
bread?). I still remember that: my first Turkish sentence! I liked that book, and also went through it slowly. And so far this might be my favorite of the Pimsleur I courses. The Romance language programs were good, but could also be painfully boring. Arabic was too hard; half the time all I heard was ghreshoerobishaydmrrrk. Japanese structure was just too complex. Turkish seems to have a better pace, and is really useful for learning to hear the language. I'm glad it's going well for you! More resources I'm enjoying: The Sound of Istanbul is a great music podcast on podomatic and itunes with modern Turkish electronica and progressive fusion. I'm also enjoying The History of Byzantium podcast. It's in English, but I like learning about the history and culture of a place along with the language. If you just want a taste, Episode 27: The Walking Dead is a stunning, harrowing account of the arrival of the plague in the Empire. (Of course, the Byzantines spoke Greek, so it's not totally relevant here). I haven't found a good, popular podcast on the Ottoman Empire or modern Turkey yet. The 1990s TY is indeed the bread one. But the 1989 version I'm using is totally different, more grammar intensive from unit 1, less dialogues etc. I prefer that so far. We'll see down the road how this approach turns out. I have to say though, Lewis, the writer, is great. I expect a full report from Turkey after you return!
