How I use Anki for Scandinavian languages:
I thought I'd write a few lines about my preferred way of using Anki. Using Anki in order to learn new (=previously unseen) vocabulary is slow and inefficient (and I really hate it), so I try to avoid this if possible and increase my passive vocabulary through exposure to native media (mainly extensive listening). But I found Anki nice to drill gender and inflections of words if reading/listening doesn't do the trick. Additionally, I expose myself to the translation or a description of a word over and over again, so I might eventually assimilate it even if I don't encounter it often in reading and listening. My current setup is as follows: front card: <headword> <translation or description> back card: <gender/inflections> The translation serves not only as a constant reminder of the meaning of the word, but is also used for disambiguation. For example, the Danish noun 'tag' could mean 'roof' or 'grip', both are neuter, but the former has the plural 'tage', the latter the plural 'tag'. I usually only take a glimpse at the translation and test myself only on the gender and inflections. This should go very fast, either I have it in my guts or I take an educated guess, thinking it out is not allowed. This way I can get through a huge pile of reviews very quickly. Furthermore, I set the multiplicator for button 1 to 50% instead of resetting failed cards to a 1 day interval. Today I (semi-automatically) prepared noun cards for Swedish. Here is an example: front: allians (politiskt) förbund back: en allians - alliansen allianser If I'll encounter a word whose meaning doesn't seem obvious to me, I'll change the description to a German translation, because this is shorter and more likely to be noticed by my brain. all things must come to an end - TAC 2013 final report
I'll make this short. My main focus this year was Danish. I did some stuff for Norwegian to keep it alive, but there is no change of abilities to report there. But let me quote my estimate of work for Danish:
I don't think I've ever stated a clear goal, but my main interest in Danish is to watch movies with relative ease. My listening comprehension of Danish is about at the level of my listening comprehension of Norwegian now, maybe even better when it comes to watching TV. It doesn't feel quite as easy as I'd like it to I have to confess, but I'm at the point where I can watch pretty much anything with headphones on and understand it. Not 100%, but more than enough. Last year, it was next to impossible to watch a movie without subtitles, now I don't need them anymore. Mission accomplished. See you next year! 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Some change of plans. Previously I wrote this:
I stopped listening to this audiobook in Danish after about 1/4 of it and am now relistening in Swedish from the start. This worked quite well with the 2nd book, so I hope this will also make it easier to follow the rest of the audiobook this time. I watched "Ved verdens ende" this week, a Danish movie, not that bad. I'm now watching the Norwegian and English series Lillehammer/Lilyhammer. The switching between English and Norwegian makes it quite hard for listening comprehension, because I can't get my brain to switch completely to Norwegian.
