Da ich ja die hebräischen Buchstaben nicht lesen kann, habe ich deinen jiddischen Text in "Google Translate" gesetzt, da Google auch Jiddisch übersetzt. Hier ist die Google - Übersetzung. Die niederländische Google - Übersetzung ist noch schlechter, daher präsentiere ich die englische Übersetzung für Leute, die das hebräische Alphabet nicht gelernt haben: "The woman a mine helped also. This is for Mauser the two was the first time that we have made such a.shfeyz Yourself in the home .vas Related cooking I zeyr loves to cook a substantial various range of species food." Das Problem stammt teilweise davon, dass Jiddisch benutzt spezielle diakritische Zeichen, und ich weiß nicht wie
ich sie schreiben kann mit meinem Rechner. Aber Google Translate ist für Jiddisch normalerweise nicht sehr nützlich in meiner Erfahrung. Teilweise auf "Deutsch" übersetzt, sieht es so aus: Mit a paar minut zurück ich hab a sach [Menge] Pelmeni aufgekocht, was is gewesen mamash ot [genau] das was ich hab stark nötig gehat. Die Frau a meine hat geholfen auchet. Das is für uns die beide gewesen das erste mal was mir haben macht azoyns [ein solchen] a Speis sich allein in der Heim. Was shayikh [relevant] kochen, ich hab sehr lieb zu kochen a mamshusdik [wesentlich] verschieden Reih von minim [Arten] Speis. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Hey geoffw, good to read about your progress in Russian! How difficult would you say is HP in Russian?
It's always fun to hear or read some Yiddish. It's very easy to understand for a German except for the occasional Hebrew word. Although I guess a real conversation in Yiddish would be pretty hard to follow. Do you by chance know this video? It's really fun to watch! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I've seen that video once upon a time, yes.
HP in Russian comes and goes in waves for me. Some portions will be nearly opaque, and other times I'll understand basically everything. Naturally, conversations in the book are easier to follow than exposition. I am very heavily leveraging my familiarity with the text, too. Other books I can still get a bit here and there, but HP is significantly easier for me, and not only because of the general level of difficulty of the text. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I recently met someone that I had been told was from Amsterdam, so I offered up something along the lines of "ik
heb gehoord dat jij spreekt Nederlands, niet waar?" I got a fairly unconfident response in Dutch, indicating that he originally came from Russia (and later heard that he'd been in boarding school in England for a long time). So I came back with a "Ну, тогда конечно ты говоришь по-русски, тоже, да?" This was, of course, met with great surprise, as well as a reply in Russian asking how exactly I came to speak Russian, as well. (I'm sure my answer that "I studied it" was not terribly enlightening, though.) Not much more than Stupid Human Tricks(TM) on my part, but seemed like an amusing anecdote worth sharing. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||

NL: Geoffw, dat zijn zo van de heel toevallige taalrelevante ontmoetingen, zoiets is wel fascinerend. Vorige week had ik ook zoiets. Ik was bij de pedicure en die vrouw die dat werk bij mij deed, bleek een polyglot te zijn. Ze sprak Duits met mij, kvam uit Polen en spreekt bovendien Turks, Engels en Russisch. Ze is met een Turk getrouwd en haar kinderen worden drietalig opgevoedt: Duits, Turks en Pools. Dat kwam ik ook uit pure toeval te weten!
