Hi all,

Apologies for not checking in. As usual, I have been working and using Anki every day.

The guy who insulted my Japanese is kind of a goofball who is rude to everyone so I
didn't take it personally. Even if he had been entirely serious I don't think it would
have really bothered me. At this point I know that I like studying languages but that
I'm not particularly good at them.

When a Japanese says your Japanese is bad you've actually reached a

I have also found this to be true, which is another reason I didn't get annoyed.

Apologies for not really participating in this challenge.

I spent this year working as a freelance J>E patent translator. It was my first year
working from home (well, mostly Starbucks) and it went pretty well. I got some new
clients and didn't lose any old clients so I'm now at the point where I may have to get
some help or start refusing more work.

This year I also ended up making friends with some Spanish speakers and doing regular
conversation exchanges with them in the mornings so my Spanish probably improved more
than my Japanese. Spanish is a way to unwind from Japanese I guess!

Anyway, I will now have a think about where to focus my energy in 2014.

Happy New Year to you all!

I keep finding the word 母国語 which, based on the Kanjis, obviously means "mother language/mother tongue/native language", but how to read them? Hahakokugo? Kaakokugo?
