Welcome to my individual TAC log for 2013. As a matter of fact I intended to
participate in TAC last year but somehow I resigned. I have my language blog (www.multigato.blogspot.com) and I thought it would be enough but it turned out it's not. I need more motivation and more interactivity with other learners. That's why this year I decided to give it a try, having read many logs updated throughout a year I guess it's a very good way to stay motivated and to exchange views and opinions with other learners. List of the languages I study on and off or actively is long, but some time ago I decided to close it for the time being not to waste time for wanderlans any more like I did before. I don't say that I won't add any more languages to this list, in fact there are several in store, but they have to wait. Languages: Arabic I love the sound of the Arabic spoken. I learn MSA as well as Egyptian dialect. So far I did Pimsleur Egyptian Arabic Course and "Colloquial Arabic of Egypt". I studied some lessons from "Teach Yourself Arabic" (for MSA) and did 7 units from DLI course for EA. I also learned plenty of vocabulary from a phrasebook published in Poland (where I live). I spent a holiday in Egypt in December so I had an opportunity to practice some things I've learned so far. As I have no plans of traveling to Arabic speaking countries next year so I think I'll spend more time on MSA, not putting aside EA. It will help me to feel more confident while watching Arabic TV (at the moment my favorite channel is Al-Jazeera) and to learn to read fluently. (I can read and write in Arabic.) English My second language. Many years ago I passed FCE and then LCCI (London Chamber of Commerce and Industry) exam level II. I'm fluent, I use it in my work so I don't register reading, watching or other activities in this languages as studies. I watch English-language news channels every day, and I also try to read a bit every day. At the moment I'm reading Margaret Thatcher's "The Downing Street Years". French I flirted with French several times. I did a few lessons and then stopped. I returned to it in 2012. At the moment I'm studing from FSI French Basic Course (Revised), I'm doing unit 15. I'd say I'm at B1 level. I watch French news channel France 24 and I understand nearly everything they say what doesn't mean I could produce the same. I spent several days in France this year and I had no problems with expressing myself in French. I had very patient hosts with whom I lived so I could practice a lot. This year I want to gain basic fluency. First I want to finish FSI course, study the Polish textbook for the advanced learners and to read my first book in French. For that occasion I bought "Africa Trek 2" by Sonia and Alexandre Poussin. I guess it'll be a very interesting read to keep me motivated. Hindi My first Asian language. I started to learn this beautiful language in 2010. I did Pimsleur course, "Colloquial Hindi" and "Teach Yourself Hindi" as well as some texbooks published in Poland (in Polish). Then I went to India for a holiday. I spent three weeks there. I'm at A2 level, I think. For the time being I have a break from it. I want to return to it this year and I hope I didn't forget much of what I had learned. Italian I've learned it for several years. I think I'm at B2 level. Next spring I'd like to take CELI exam. I can watch TV news or read a book without difficulties in this language. To take an exam I think I have to gain more fluency and to study more grammar. Portuguese I'd say I'm at B2 level and I want to move further. Some say that Brazilian version sounds much nicer, but I prefer the European one. My knowledge of Spanish is a big asset here. Watching TV news (RTP Internacional) or reading a book isn't a problem. I need to gain more fluency – I'd like to reach at least C1 level this summer. Spanish My favorite. My knowledge at C2 level is confirmed by DELE diploma issued by Spanish Ministry of Education. That's why, although I try to watch or read in this languages every day I don't register it as studies. Swahili My ambition is to know at least one languages from all the continents. This is my first African language, not counting Arabic. I hope someday I'll have an opportunity to travel to Kenya or Tanzania, and Swahili - althought not necessary - may prove of some help there. I'm a beginner. I did Pimsleur Basic Couse (10 units) and "Colloquial Swahili". Now I'm studying FSI course - currently unit 41. Turkish I spent a holiday in Turkey in 2008, and I fell in love with the country and people. I'm stuck at A2 level. I want to move further. I hope that TAC will give me more motivation and I'll get over the hump as regards Turkish. I did Pimsluer course and "Colloquial Turkish", I learned some vocabulary form a phrasebook, now I'm studying FSI course. Others I also learned: Russian (8 years at school), Latin (4 year at school), Swedish, Croatian, Dutch, German, Esperanto, Hungarian, Koine Greek and Hebrew. On my wish list I have Persian and Koine Greek (still - to be able to read a part of the Bible written in Greek.) Hi Przemek! It's great to have you on Team Alef. How was your holiday in Egypt? I would love to visit there
someday. My main focus is Persian, but I'm also studying Arabic. It's such a cool-sounding language and many of my friends have Arabic as their native language. Élan: I will surely read your log and who knows - I may start Persian earlier than I
think now. As to my holiday it was great. Although I spent part of it on the beach (I needed more sun as now we have winter here in Poland) I managed to travel to Cairo with a friend. It was a very interesting travel, to be there, to see ancient pyramids and other places I learned about at school, as well as to see with my own eyes the Tahrir Square which at the moment is one of the most talked about places in the news. As I already wrote, I will register my progress in some of the languages I enumerated, with a particular focus on: Arabic (of course!), Swahili, Turkish and Hindi. Just a short note to confirm that I've entered 2013 safe and sound, and I didn't sit and
wait. Tuesday, the first day of 2013 was a busy day. I refreshed two chapters (22-23) of Assimil "El nuevo portugués sin esfuerzo" and reviewed the first unit of "Teach Yourself Hindi". It's hard to say that I'm a beginner but I've done nothing with the latter for two last years so it's almost like beginning to learn it anew. I also watched "Telejornal da tarde" on RTP Internacional. Apart from that I read several chapters of Margaret Thatcher's "The Downing Street Years". Wednesday is a day for French and Arabic. I tagged your languages, but for Arabic there's only a choice between "Classical Arabic" and "Arabic".
