To those who've read my last post before my final edit: The link to a sample of my attempt at
handwriting is working now.

@Warp3 When registering, I only wanted to participate with Mandarin. Which is not to say I want
to drop Japanese, and as this team turned out to encompass Japanese, too, I might do at least
some of the challenges (if there'll be any this time) in Japanese, too, etc. However I'm not planning
to actively study Japanese until either my Chinese is satisfactory, or life happens and Japanese
becomes more important, somehow.
In short, I plan to just enjoy some Visual Novels and Anime, write to my Chinese penpal, maybe
learn some JSL through it, and finally learn to play and sing a 憂歌団 song. But no goals or
chores.

TAC'15 January Challenge

一人。 アスペルガー症候群とか、 憂鬱とかに罹ってる。 暇人でしょうなのに、 情けない
ことに、 いつでも勉強するワケじゃない。 今回日本語に集中するつもりがないけど、 暇な
らちょっとアニメを観たり、 ギャルゲーを読んだりしてもいいかな。 言われてみれば、 昨
日Subs2SRSっぽいカードを (アンキで) 作り出した。 でも今回もっと遅く、 たったの15
句/日。 今までらき☆すたの二話には1分から約5句が わかんないなら、 ろくにうまく行け
る、 ねん? 中国語には、 LWTを使ってる。

It seems this year we’re also gonna start with a brief self-introduction, so; my name is Matthias,
I’m a 19yo Pole. I suffer from Asperger’s Syndrome and Depression. I’ve got plenty of free
time, which doesn’t mean I’m studying all the time, though. This time around I’m not planning to
focus on Japanese, but if I might watch some Anime, or read a visual novel, as a breather.
Speaking of Anime, yesterday I started making some Subs2SRS-like cards in Anki. But at a tad
slower pace than the last time, just about 15 new cards per day. So far, I mined about 5 cards
per minute of Lucky Star (episode two), so I hope it’ll all go smoothly. For Chinese, I’m using
LWT.

Very interesting intro, Ezy Ryder, and your progress has been really impressive. Keep it
up. I'd be very interested in seeing how you use LWT, as I've never really used it
before. There's an Anki add-on for Japanese called Yomichan that functions similarly, I
believe.

I'm aware of Yomichan, I've used it already, and even mentioned it in my first post in the team
thread ;)
I'm still new to LWT, and discovering it as I go. So, how I do things now might not be optimal,
and could change in the future. But what I'm doing right now is:
1. Import a text (in pure Chinese, no translation, added spaces between characters, or
anything).
2. Read the text with a little help from my "Zhongwen Chinese Popup Dictionary." I read the text,
and whenever I stumble upon a new word (or quite likely, a forgotten word), I hover my mouse
over it, to see how long the word is, and what's its definition.
3. Then I click on the first character of the word (LWT by default can either distinguish word
boundaries by spaces, or treat every character as a separate entity), I select the option to treat
the word as an expression (you can select how many entities (in this case characters)
constitute to the expression (in this case, word).
4. I copy-paste the appropriate romanization and deffinition from my dictionary of choice
(without the need to go to another tab/window), select the status of the word (ease of the word:
1-5, WKn (well known), or Ign (ignore)), and create a "term."

Of course, if the word is well known, or to be ignored (like names, for example), there's no need
to bother with the romanization and definition. It then highlights each word during reading,
according to its status. Blue for words without a "term" created for them yet; red-green for levels
1-5, green underlining for well known, and black underlining for ignored words. There are also
some statistics, like percentage of known words in each text, number of terms created today,
yesterday, this week, month, year and all time (per every language and in toto).
There's a built in SRS (which IIRC is based on the status of terms, and which changes it
accordingly to your retention of each term), and option to export selected type of terms
(probably by status, date of creation, tags...) in a format compatible with Anki (including the
sentence you added the word from). Unfortunately I haven't tried the testing, nor Anki export
functions myself yet.

Today I've been listening to an album by the "Czerwone Gitary" (Red Guitars). Two songs have
particularly caught my attention. So, I decided to try and translate them. I've translated the
second one only to English so far, but I'll try to finish it tomorrow.

Chinese: 1000 LWT terms. I’ve just checked the statistics in LWT, and it seems I’ve
surpassed 1000 terms created yesterday. I also gave the “test” function a try. There are six
options you can choose from:

..[L2].. – A whole sentence is displayed, and the word you’re supposed to review is highlighted.
Passive sentence review.
..[L1].. – A whole sentence is displayed, and the word you’re supposed to review is highlighted,
and displayed in your L1. Active/production sentence review.
..[・・].. – A whole sentence is displayed, save for the word you’re supposed to review (which
is substituted with these dots). Cloze-deletion/MCD(?).
[L2] – Only the word you’re supposed to review is displayed (in the L2). Passive isolated
vocabulary review. What I’m doing.
[L1] – Only the word you’re supposed to review is displayed (in your L1). Active/production
isolated vocabulary review.
Table – You get to choose what is displayed in a table.

The last two days weren’t particularly productive. Two days ago, I got up at 9AM, after 3 hours
of sleep. Went to bed at 8AM (the next day), and got up at 19:50 (~12h of sleep). Today I went
to bed at 2AM (after only 6 hours up), and got up at 17:30 (so, 15h of sleep). Yesterday I woke
up more tired than when going to bed; today it’s a bit better. None of this makes studying any
easier. Not to mention establishing a routine. However, if I'll finish today, and keep up this
week's pace till October, I should get to ~21.5k terms created.
