Over the last few years I have bought and watched several US TV series on DVDs. This has definitely helped me to keep my spoken English up to date. Now I would like to boost my German and I am wondering if any German TV series are available on DVD which would be interesting to watch and would help me with the language as well.

Here is a list of what I have in English to give anyone willing to help me with recommendations an idea of what I have found watchable in the past:

Frasier
Seinfeld
X-Files
Lost
Battlestar Galactica
Desperate Housewives
Big Bang Theory

Anyone knows any German series similar in genre and quality to any of the above?

Thanks.

I don’t know of any German TV series comparable to the American ones you listed, but I’ve got a bunch of Tatort DVDs I like a lot. Most of them have German subtitles and, since they’re set in cities all over Germany, you get to here the regional differences. I’ve also got a film series trilogy called Heimat that I’m about halfway through and really enjoying, although I can’t understand all the parts where they speak dialect and there aren’t any German subtitles.

You can also get American TV series on DVD that have been dubbed into German and have German subtitles. In terms of quality and my own personal preference, I’ve found Band of Brothers, 24, Sopranos and Sherlock Holmes (starring Jeremy Brett) to be excellent.

AlOlaf, thanks for the tips. The Heimat series in particular looks promising.

Make sure you get the German version. The American one has English subtitles you can't get rid of.

Thanks for the heads up. I am planning to buy the DVDs from Amazon Germany, so I will be getting the German ones.
