Surfing Fjords - Norwegian log for TAC 2013

Welcome to my log for TAC 2013, in which I endeavor to annihilate Norwegian rather than
letting it annihilate me. Right now I am part of the Scandinavian #2 team.
Hopefully we get a more creative name soon!

The log name comes from the fact that I live in one of California's best surfing spots.

Background

I am a "zero beginner" in Norwegian. Previous knowledge of French (research ability
from college) and Latin.

I work at a research lab and spend a lot of time hiking, doing Crossfit and reading
history.

Goals

--Process: end year with an average of >15 hours of study/week (or 750 hours total)
--Realistic: achieve A2+/B1 proficiency by end of year
--Stretch: achieve B2 proficiency & confidence to list language on resume
--Long-term: eventually be able to read Jo Nesbø (TAC 2014 goal?)

Strategy

--Textbooks: I learn best from textbooks/grammars. Planning to use FSI, TYS and På
Vei to start, followed by Stein på Stein
--Native materials: planning to jump into Naiv. Super as soon as possible (inspired by
the Norsk Experiment). Looking for Norwegian news sites that are "easy" but "serious"
(no tabloids)
--Anki: vocabulary building is usually tough for me, so will be logging Anki hours
separately

Maybe you can find some news sites on this part of the forum: http://how-to-learn-any-
language.com/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=32

I'm pretty sure you'll pick up Norwegian as long as you stay motivated, and with 15>
hours a week it shouldn't be a problem.

Looking forward to follow your progress, good luck! (and maybe even more important: have
fun!)

Good luck with your Norwegian studies, and do not be afraid to ask me for help if you need it!
