It's now February, the Tadoku Challenge is over and I can breathe a bit easier now.
The final tally was 2542, with 2511 of those being books. I'm up to page 446 in Watchers, and expect to finish it tomorrow. Should also be able to finish Gulliver's Travels (p63 currently) tomorrow. I think I'll start The Hunger Games next. Now it's time to start Assimil and my Finnish studies. I don't expect to keep up that reading pace all year. My reading has calmed down a bit.
Year to date total for reading: 3542 pages Year to date total for watching/listening: 1240 minutes I'll post an update when I get back home. I'm sitting in Reykjavik at the moment. Iceland is beautiful. I've managed to understand a total of 6 words in Icelandic so far, although some of those words I understood several times in a conversation. Thankfully everyone speaks English. After being here a while and hearing Icelandic spoken regularly, I think it is a beautiful language and one that I would like to learn someday. So I'll keep my materials and start studying it a bit later this year. I want to get my Finnish up to a more reasonable level first though. I'll probably watch a lot of the Olympic coverage again, in Russian. One of the main channels here has all the events online, so you can watch them again, which I will do. I think it's only available in Russia though. I'm a bit stuck with the book I'm currently reading, Mount Dragon. It's kind of a science thriller, and I sometimes get stuck in the terminology or just trying to understand what's happening, although looking back, I can remember being stuck in English too. No problem though, I've got 100 pages to go, then I'm done and can start the Hunger Games 2. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

February was a busy month, so while I listened to some Russian music, I did not have
the time to actively translate any songs. Why was February so busy? Some problems with teachers at school, and as one of the directors, I need to take care of that. The trip to Iceland was a big one, coordinating everything with my parents and the wedding planner to make sure things went to plan. They did. And then being jet lagged when I got back to work. That being said, my month was not a complete waste. February totals: 1100 minutes, mostly Olympic coverage, but some films too. I plan on re-watching some of the events, mostly the ones I missed. 1492 pages read. 1 short test taken from my B2 test book, it was a grammar test, and I got 29/40. Not great, but I figured out my mistakes and for the most part, remember the rules. One of my colleagues took the C1 exam this past week, and I think my level is comparable to hers, if not slightly higher in fluency (by fluency I mean how freely I can speak, not that I am a fluent speaker). She'll get the results in a month. Plans for March: Reading: 1500-2000 pages, I can read 30 pages a day during my commute alone, and combined with a bit of bedtime reading, I should be okay. Films: Aiming for about 1200 minutes. In terms of actual studying, I'd like to work through some more of the tests, and finish quite a few more B2 tests, to make sure my grammar is at the correct level. I'm also going to dive into my grammar book and get a few units of that done. I plan on buying a cd/cassette player, so I can finally start my Assimil Finnish. For March, maybe aim for 15 units? I'll also review my Suomen Mestari book, and do some work in Finnish for Foreigners 1. I'd like to finish that book by June, and get through the second book by December. We shall see though. My Icelandic book will have to wait a bit. I bought a textbook and grammar book in Reykjavik, but I'm going to wait until I've got a stronger base in Finnish, and more time! If there's another Tadoku challenge this month, I plan on entering for Russian. I bought a Finnish book while I was in Copenhagen. There was a little book market there, and while I was looking for something in Danish for my friend, I found a bunch of Finnish books. So I got one. It appears to be a young adult book, so maybe it will be useful in the future. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Almost the end of March, and it's my 100th post.
Minutes in March: 1880min Pages read: 1597 So that brings the year to date totals to: 2980 min 5353 pages I did some work in my grammar book, as well as 3 tests from the my B2 test book. I did one test back in January, and made 11 mistakes, then I did 2 more a few weeks ago and made 5 in each of those. So, there is some progress happening, even if I'm not actively studying Russian grammar. I've dome some Finnish review as well, but progress is very slow going on that front. I'll be doing some Georgian over the next 2 months as it appears I'll be spending 3 weeks there in May. I'm aiming to learn the alphabet and about 100-200 words, mostly basic expressions and words that I'll need. So overall, not a great month, but not a terrible one either. I'm doing the Tadoku challenge, and I'm at over 1000 pages. A lot of those were TV shows with subtitles, which I've counted in my log as minutes, towards my personal super challenge. That reminds me that I'll be doing the official Super Challenge, which starts next month I believe (by next month I mean May). My languages will be Russian and Finnish, although my Russian goals will be exponentially higher than my Finnish goals. Some goals for April: Georgian -Learn the alphabet -Learn basic food words -Basic expressions -Ideally 75-100 words in April, possibly on memrise, if there are any Georgian courses on there. Finnish -Go through Pimsleur -Work through Assimil, up to about lesson 25 I think would be good. -Get another 100 words on memrise Russian -Another 750-1000 pages read -About 10-25 pages in my grammar book -3-5 test in my mini-test book, B@ level -Decide whether I want to try the C1 exam this June. *Edited to change my March total reading. After a day of reading, I added 247 pages to my total. I could read more tonight before the Tadoku challenge closes, but I won't. I need a break, at least until tomorrow. Georgian goals, how nice! I'm sure Georgian people will be friendly and those words will
learn will make the difference at making your stay more rewarding. And yes, there are plenty of memrise courses for Georgian, including one with the words at the book 'Basic Georgian' and a few more that may actually be better for you at the current stage. 1 person has voted this message useful |
