Hi everyone,

I love listening to podcasts like Spark, Radiolab, To The Best of Our Knowledge, Intelligence Squared, Little Atoms, etc., to give you a flavor. Are there similarly cool podcasts in French? I'm looking for specific recommendations, not general links to RFI, RSR, France Culture, etc.

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the podcasts that you list, but if you're interested in a top-quality science-oriented French podcast, then I highly recommend La Tête au Carré. It's 60 minutes long, with five episodes a week. Each day's episode centers on one main topic, discussed by host Mathieu Vidard and one or more specialists on that day's topic. Friday episodes are always entitled "Débat autour de l'actualité scientifique", with various specialists discussing recent events.

The only thing I don't much care for is that France Inter always puts a couple of musical breaks into their longer podcasts, so you have to either suffer through or fast-forward these three-minute musical "gems" (the first of which appears about five minutes into La Tête au Carré). The rest of the podcast, however, is excellent.

Thanks, LtM, for your answer. I've been listening on and off to La Tête au Carré for quite some time, and while I agree with you that it's a good podcast, I find it much less captivating than the podcasts I mentioned in my earlier post. Maybe that's just my limited perception, but I find that the French have a tendency to present such topics in a official, formal, scholarly fashion, whereas the podcasts I mentioned earlier are often much more concrete, experiential and story-based.

I don't think that's what you're looking for but it might be of some help to someone. My favorite science podcasts are CQFD from the Swiss La Premiere and O Positif from the Belgian RTBF. In every podcast there are a couple of subjects raised, for example: the perception of time or why men like breasts. I sincerely recommend them.

I've just listened to O Positif, and I quite liked it. It's chatty and fun to listen to. Thanks for the recommendation! I will also listen to CQFD to check it out, it's, after all, from Switzerland :)

I'm glad you liked it. Science podcasts are the only thing I listen in French right now. I'm usually more into literature but the shows about books are super boring to me. Science shows on the other hand really catch my interest. It's a double win as well. I practice French and learn something useful about the world at the same time.

"Au coeur de l'histoire" is another great podcast, about diverse historical topics. If you're interested in history, I recommend it warmly. You can find it on iTunes.
