because, while nearly all classes suck in terms of the pronunciation, the Latin ones are where the least attention is given to it.

I would say that Newt either studied Spanish from a book with no audio content and/or is
reading from cue cards. His pronunciation sounds like some people in my Spanish 101
class. It sounds like he is attempting to pronounce his vowels like English vowel at
time and he word stress is very very bad.

While I also think that his Spanish leaves a lot to be desired, I've had classmates who spoke just as badly in English, Spanish and what not (and that's with tapes, CDs, movies etc.). Some people just never pay attention to pronunciation.
So, Gingrich might not have a convincing accent in his target language, but he's not alone.

Can't comment on Kerry's French, but Gingrich actually went up (slightly) in my
estimation from this. He does sound awful, but it does seem like he understands what he
was saying and he even seemed quite sincere. It's not like he's hard to understand. This
is quite hard for me to say as I find his views quite repugnant.

Well I can only agree with the majority here: Kerry's French was good- not absolutely perfect - but good. The
Spanish sequence was painful to listen to. If I had been his teacher I would have died of embarrassment. If I
were to grade them on a scale from 1-10, I would have given Kerry an 8 and Gingrich a 1.

I haven't heard the Prof speak Spanish or French, but Gingrich's Spanish pronunciation is clearly better than Arguelles' Swedish pronunciation. Anyone have a clip of Arguelles speaking either of these two languages?

A few years ago, someone posted a link to a short radio interview in Spanish. It was a long clip - the interview with Arguelles started after say 35 minutes. Maybe someone remembers it?
Edit:
I found it!

From the the original thread:
"The Professor's interview in English starts around 20:17. The interview in Spanish starts at around 50:15."

That's high level Spanish to my ears. Definitely fluent, maybe not native sounding, but I can't hear a single trace of his native English.
