Surprisingly (perhaps not?) I found the classic Colloquial Spanish written by Patterson
were reprinted, by many different publishers, when I browsed through the
www.bookfiner.com (which should have saved me days if I had known it before my first
online shopping experience...).

You may have a look here:

I did not see the same thing for Colloquial German, and I am now checking for French.

At any rate, I am still going to get the old one from 1947. Though some sellers stated
it was a reprint, I'm worried about any possible dumb down of the material or
shortening of vocabulary bank, etc. Or am I worrying too much?

By the way, you can find an online copy of the 1919 edition, free and legal, at the Internet Archive:

    Colloquial Spanish

I'd be willing to bet that the reprints you see advertised are identical with this archive version.

In fact, when I see an old title that has been reprinted recently, it often turns out to be available from the archive as well. These are books that are no longer under copyright, and which someone else has already done the work of scanning in, usually from a copy in some university library. Naturally, this free material reduces costs for the publishers who are reprinting the book.
