Finished 巴金's 《家》 (shorter version) and started reading yet another short story: 蒋
韵's 《红色娘子军》 (The Red Detachment of Women).

Did the usual vocabulary drills (words in Anki, characters in Skritter, words in
Pleco).

Finished the ChinesePod lessons about 毕业后的生活 and the poor suffocating expat. I
didn't do any spoken exercise, but I felt it was time to move on.

Purged the SRS vocabulary queue in Learning With Texts. Also in LWT, I imported the
news from Selkouutiset, read them, than listened to the audio version, first while
reading simultaneously, then without reading.

Apart from the usual vocabulary routine and 蒋韵's short story I have started reading
yesterday, I checked the nice lyrics of two songs by a Taiwanese indie band I
particularly like: 壞女兒. There are a few songs of theirs on Youtube. Some live
versions are awful but the studio versions are great. While I was at it, I also
discovered another very good band called 草莓救星. I'll have to investigate.

I started a ChinesePod lesson about 营养标签.

LA

Continued reading Regulus.

I feel like I'm bogged down. These last few days, I've barely had enough energy to review
my vocabulary queues and to read a bit of 《红色娘子军》, and that's it.

Admitting this in my log amounts to an attempt to pull myself out of the quicksands.

My objective for today is: do just one more little something. Anything.

Ah, I *did* "just one more little something": I translated into French a gripping very
short story I had read a few weeks ago: 《炊烟》, by 阿城. At just 1,300 characters, I
think it qualifies as what they call "microfiction", a subgenre Chinese authors have
been cultivating for centuries. It was an interesting exercise as I sometimes wonder if
I'm really reading Chinese prose or if I'm just hallucinating. Do I really understand
or am I just fooling myself? In this particular case, there are just two small chunks
of one sentence that I was unable to translate, and I haven't put much effort into this
process, so it was a positive exercise. I may have a second look at my text today.

Apart from that, I finished reading 蒋韵's short story called 《红色娘子军》. It was
fascinating and hard to read (for me) for linguistic, stylistic and cultural reasons.
The vocabulary is rich, with lots of idioms, images and complex sentences; there are
three related subplots; and it's full of historic and cultural references related not
only to the cultural revolution in the PRC but also to the recent history of Singapore
(which, I confess, is totally unknown to me).

Did the usual vocab routine.

Started reading a short story called 《雨伞在整形手术台上打开》, by 鲍鲸鲸. I liked the title
and I wondered if it was an allusion to a famous metaphor by the French poet
Lautréamont who once said that a certain someone was "beautiful as the chance meeting
on a dissecting table of a sewing machine and an umbrella". However, after a few
(electronic) pages, I decided I didn't like it, as I had the feeling the author was
gratuitously nasty towards his main character.

So I started reading something lighter (?), a novel about tomb robbers called 《盗墓笔
记》, by 徐磊. In fact, I doubt whether I am able to read this and I don't know how far
I can go, but I'd like to give it a try anyway. I've read part of chap. 1 and, though
it has involved quite a lot of dictionary lookups, I've enjoyed it so far.

The text is available here.

And there's some information in English
here.

With the Chinesepod lesson about 成分表:
- did focused listening exercises
- did some parroting/shadowing
- did a copy/retranslation exercise
- added unknown vocab to Anki as Cloze deleted sentences

Studied my vocabulary queues (characters in Skritter, Anki deck and Pleco list).

There have been several very interesting discussions on HTLAL about the value of
extensive and intensive listening, relative to the stage at which you are in your
learning, and about the usefulness of formal vocab studying vs. acquisition in context.

Inspired by a post by Bakunin in the thread "Learning Vocab without Studying Vocab", I
just typed "educational videos for kids chinese" in a famous search engine and came
across a treasure trove of resources I might use in the future.

I ended up watching silly flash videos illustrating some prepositions and words. Oh my,
videos for, what, 4 year olds - and I didn't understand them fully :( So I used them
as a dictation (in pinyin).

Read a bit more of chap. 1 of 《盗墓笔记》.

Did the usual vocab chores in Anki, Pleco and Skritter.

Finished reading Saint-Exupéry's Regulus. As mentioned already, I'd read this book
several times before, in three different languages, and I even translated it in my own
mother tongue at a time when it hadn't been translated yet. So I know it quite well.
And yet, I found that the Latin version was rather difficult. On the other hand, maybe
because I was reading the story in yet another language, I had the impression it was
again very fresh and I enjoyed it a lot.

Funny enough that you'd say that, I also found Bakunin's post inspiring but didn't know
how to find such resources for Chinese. So thanks for that ;)
