Hi! I know there are some posts about various materials for MSA. But I'd like to ask
about the two specific courses: FSI and DLI. Has anyone tried both of them and could
share their opinion?

I did the first ten lessons of FSI MSA Arabic in 2011. It took me about six weeks, and
it was excruciatingly painful at times.

The biggest problem is that there is no answer key, and so if you get stuck on an issue
you might be stuck for days while you try and figure it out. I remember being unable
to untangle a sentence similar to this:

- The ambassador flew on the jet into the national airport.

or it might have been ...

- The ambassador flew on the national jet into the airport.

or ...

- The ambassador of the country flew into the airport on the jet.

Since each drill is based upon the previous one, once you are stuck, you are stuck for
awhile.

The good part, though, is like other FSI courses it contains massive amounts of
material. It's a writing-based course, so I became much more comfortable with Arabic
script. It's worth starting, I just don't think it's as easy for the auto-didact to
use like some of the other FSI courses.

Thank you.

Anyone else? I have an impression that FSI course is concentrated more on vocabulary
connected with military and consular work, while DLI has more everyday language, but
that's just my impression after browsing two books so I may be wrong.
