I started learning French a little over a year ago. I worked through Assimil New French With Ease (all the passive phase and most of the active), listened to a lot of France Inter, and watched many many hours of French movies and YouTube clips. I also kept a notebook of sentences and expressions that caught my eye or that I thought might be useful. I practiced a bit with Anki and paper flashcards, too, though not all that regularly.
These days I can have pretty decent conversations with natives. I rarely have to ask people to repeat anything, and though I can tell that they slow down a bit for my benefit, it's not very dramatic. People often seem impressed when I tell them that I've been learning for roughly a year, so I guess I did something right. :-)
I think that NFWE definitely gave me a nice base to begin understanding native materials and a good stock of grammar and expressions to use. I still make lots of mistakes, of course, but I feel like I'm still improving regularly both in my skills and in my confidence with the language.

Looks like patience will be key. On RMC I understand about a word per spoken
chunk/sentence. etre, avec, numbers --common words like these. I guess I'll continue to
listen here and there for the sounds and accents.
My loose plan is the finish French with Ease in July and then try a bastardized Jerry
Dai/Glossika sentence method.
