My grandfather is Ukrainian and he has birthday on 12th of June. A while back I got an advice of how can I surprise him by learning an Ukrainian poem.
I picked the poem:
Quote:

More than that, I wrote it down in cursive (sort of):

Then I have found the pronunciation rules and got upset.

To be continued...

To my own surprise I have found a decent Russian song (alternative rock/ post-grunge) and liked it so much that I want to check if I can translate it into English.

click to listen: Небо здесь - Ты не уйдешь

не верю что поверил сам в твои мечты
не знаю где кончаюсь я и начинаешься ты
не помню где забыл тебя
но там ты и ждешь
и не уйдешь без меня
ты не уйдешь

I can't believe that I believed in your dreams
I don't know where I end and where you begin
I don't remember where I have forgotten you
But you are waiting there
And you won't leave without me
You won't leave

теперь я вижу что ослеп от темноты
голос в моей руке это ты
на три часа впереди ты скоро уснешь
без меня
но ты не уйдешь
ты не уйдешь

Now I see that I'm blinded by the darkness
The voice in my hand is you
You're three hours ahead, you'll fall asleep soon
without me
But you won't leave
You won't leave

и кто скажи мне теперь
в кого влюблен
и где кончается жизнь
и начинается сон
как называются те
для кого ты живешь
я не достался тебе
и ты не уйдешь
ты не уйдешь

Tell me
Who's in love with whom now
And where the life ends
And the dream begins
How to call those
Whom you are living for
You haven't got me
And you won't leave
You won't leave

Any comments would be much appreciated, just as usual.

I was sure I'll fail my Ukrainian mission as I haven't managed to learn the poem by heart
and didn't exactly understand pronunciation rules. I nearly decided not to do anything at
all, but people were congratulating my grandfather in very different ways so I gave up
and decided just to read the poem (fortunately I had its photo on my phone). I wasn't at
all good, I think, I began to read very nervously, my awful diction adding up probably
made it hard to understand, but from what I saw later, everyone were impressed.
Apparently my grandfather understood just enough to claim that this is Леся Украинка's
poem (well, honestly, he just eagerly agreed when my mother told him about that).
Anyway, I want to thank shedl for that idea, it is definitely worth a shot!

I reached that state of mind when you have to do so much you have no idea where to start and therefore just lie on your back motionless. My thoughts usually go to my languages in these times as I have to understand what is going on with them. I wanted to read something, but the problem with reading is that you better to deal with texts you know exactly how to read, this is no different regardless of the language of the text.
I was listening to a German song and the idea of reading any song's lyrics seemed just great. I can sing some songs with my awful voice, therefore I grasp the idea of pronouncing things.
Unfortunately, pronunciation isn't always right there, plus you have intonation problems when reading is waaay different from singing, but the result is just some approximation anyway.
Enough of blabbing.
German: Letzte Instanz - Mein Todestag
text >>> audio >>> song to compare with
English: Dream Theater - The Count Of Tuscany
text >>> audio >>> song to compare with
The second one would be hard to work with for impatient people, but that was the first song I thought about, so I record its lyrics.
And hell yeah, German sounds robotic. I did my best though.

The only relatively active use of foreign languages now is watching a shitload of House M.D. in order not to get insane. Don't think it's really useful, because I use Eng+Eng and don't care about medical terms at all. But it certainly helps me to relax, haha.
And, okay, I still listen to songs, mostly English and German ones.

Language, lady!!!!!

What is with you and Marina.

I was recently reading a post by a Russian dude who was lamenting that Russian women do not talk in a feminine fashion.

I was raised way too polite anyway... and I really, really watch too much of House M.D. (thank you, Hugh Laurie!)
As for that Russian dude - I'm curious about his environment, because in my circles women mostly talk fine, I think... but okay, you can't trust an introvert about that.
P.S. I use swearing words only when others just aren't enough. The number of cases when it's not enough grows, but I do not curse everything every minute. At least not aloud :D

I have really good chances to fail my upcoming physical chemistry exam. I also have troubles dealing with scientific English. I guess I know how to solve both these problems simultaneously, thankfully, I will have about 2-3 months to make it all work.
Though this plan looks so scary that I'm not sure if I will hold on long enough. Better pass the exam, hehe.
