Popular German series, as far as I can tell:
Series: -Türkisch für Anfänger -Tatort (extremely popular but must have been around for years) "Telenovelas": -Anna und die Liebe -Verliebt in Berlin -Berlin Berlin You can find an archive of a lot of educational programs on http://www.3sat.de/index.html (under "Sendungen A-Z) Personally I like watching stuff on ZDFneo (.de), there is a "mediathek" on their webpage. If you were to look for soap operas there'd be stuff like: -Marienhof -Gute Zeiten Schlechte Zeiten -Unter Uns -Verbotene Liebe -(really old school: Lindenstraße) All of which, at least to some extent (probably not all episodes), can surely be found on youtube. The "Wilsberg" detective series set in Münster is great fun, and not too difficult to
follow. (Based on the books by Jürgen Kehrer). I think the books are a bit darker than the TV series, which seems to be played for laughs somewhat, but it's still good. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I recently ordered the Türkisch für Anfänger complete series and the Stromberg complete
series from Amazon.de. I happened to be browsing their site and I saw the series "Doctor Diary". The box set was only €18 (without VAT as it's shipping to the US) so I ordered it. Is this any good? At the very least, I figured it's about 1,000 mins of TV all in German 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Deutsche Welle has lots of materials for German learners, including level appropriate soap operas and such.
Tartort, the beloved weekly German crime show (more than 50 bars here in Berlin show it live each Sunday night) is available from the ARD site: http://www.daserste.de/unterhaltung/krimi/tatort/index.html Personally I find Tatort relatively hard to follow compared to say a dubbed HBO show, but it will give you an interesting insights into German culture. It's filmed by different TV stations across Germany (and Switzerland and Austria) so you get quite different cultural views depending on the particularly city a particular show is filmed in. People have their favorite crime teams - I think my wife's is Leipzig. There are also a lot of other shows available on ARD you watch: http://programm.daserste.de/pages/programm/liste.aspx I am not sure if there is a problem viewing these shows outside Germany, though my wife used to watch Tatort from the UK. Supposed to have been based on the British "Coronation Street", originally. I've seen
quite an interesting documentary about it. Soaps are ....hmm....I dunno. Having been slightly addicted to some UK soaps in my time, I'm not sure I'd want to get sucked into another, even in the noble cause of language- learning. I have the same dilemma at the moment in Welsh: there is a "classic" soap on S4C called "Pobol y Cwm", dual subtitles available....tempting...but I think I'll give it a miss. 1 person has voted this message useful |
