I saw a TV program not so long ago where it was said that Finnish had its own meter
(poetry) and rhythm, for example in the national epic Kalevala. This meter was designed
to fit the Finnish language, but it didn't become popular in songs or anything like
that. Instead, a Germanic meter (Swedish influence)became popular and it is still used
nowadays. So I guess there is some truth in it that some languages might sound weird if
forced to fit into predetermined "boxes" which happen to be tailored for English or
other similar languages.

BUT I still think it is rather subjective, even if a language is not using an optimal
system it might still produce good enough results for certain people, as it is always a
matter of opinion. That being said, I cannot picture in my mind how Chinese is supposed
to sound if all tones are taken into account when being sung. Are the tones respected
in folk music or other kind of style? it seems that in pop or other modern (western?)
music the tones are just not there.

They are not taken into account. No matter the genre, there are no tones in Chinese languages when sung.

Old Gaulish, it is the ancestor of modern Breton and Welsh. The language is only
scarcely
documented, so they hire celtologists and other scientists to reconstruct possible
pronunciations for the shards of text (generally genuine archeological remnants) that
are used.

BTW, as far as I know, their singer speaks (Swiss) German, English and French. And he
at least knows about gwerz (traditional Breton folk songs) :)

I can not recommend Cornelis Vreeswijk enough because the pronunciation is so clear.

I just had to add Petra Marklund (aka September) who IMO has an extremly cool and unique voice. Her last
album Inferno is in Swedish and has some excellent tracks, this being my favorite:
