How about a list of five, out of which an aspiring polyglot should learn at least one?

imo:
Finnish
Turkish
Mandarin
Hindi
Indonesian

Basically, a non-endangered language which is very different from the typical Spanish/German/French hit list.
apart from Hindi all are non-IE.

What do you mean by aspiring polyglot? Is there some secret Club for polyglots where you need to know one
of those languages?

You should learn languages linked to culture/country you like.
If you like Bollywood movies, you should learn Hindi (and not Thai),
if you like (to travel to) Thailand, you should learn Thai (and not Mandarin)
etc.
Don't separate the language from its culture.

Studying Mandarin with zero interest in Chinese culture
is a formula for failure.

No, but my respect for a polyglot skyrockets if he/she speaks Finnish convincingly :P

why single me out, btw? I actually think it's unrealistic to have a list of five languages that everyone should (try to) learn. If we make this sort of list, it's more realistic to consider them optional.
