Does anyone have an opinion on what a good introduction to linguistics text is? Somewhat inspired by the recent thread about Clugston, I'd like to pursue the discipline independently. Any information anyone would like to share would be appreciated?

Linguistics is a huge swamp of all sorts of information, what do you want to read about? Historical-comparative linguistics, areal linguistics, etc.

The best way to go about this is to look at university courses, and they often publish their reading list in the prospectus or online. There are usually one or two books that students are expected to buy, and they're usually the books that offer the overview (also quick tip: they're also the ones that are never checked out of the library, because everyone has their own copy, if you fancy saving some money). If you're specifically interested in second language acquisition, then look at applied linguistics courses and modules on second language acquisition. My university (Missouri State) used this textbook for the intro course and I'm fond of

As Henkkles has said, Linguistics is a huge field. It's pretty impossible to recommend any source without knowing which branch interests you. If you just need an introduction to linguistics and all its branches and sub-fields of study, pretty much any Intro to Linguistics or 101 book will do. Amazon has tons to choose from. From there, you might want to take a look at some Applied Linguistics resources. It's probably what's most applicable to language-learning (if that's the relation you're looking for with linguistics courses and resources). R. == 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

When I took linguistics at university as a voluntary two term long course we used this
