That depends on the translator and the philosphy of translation that s/he adhered to, because many many German translators added/removed whole paragraphs and often tried to make books more suitable for German readers. Most books by Fontane and Mann are not exactly easy reading and require a much larger active vocabulary than say detective novels. That's why I suggested Edgar Wallace's books, which should be easy enough for advanced beginners and intermediate students. Which books you pick depends on what you want to achieve, if you ultimatively want to read mostly German classics in the original, it probably wouldn't make much sense to read detective novels. On the other hand, if you just want to increase your active vocabulary and don't want to sound like a character out of a Fontane novel, reading detective novels might make more sense. 1 person has voted this message useful |
