I'd also like to know about the challenge for February. We're almost halfway through the month ;)

Maybe we should just pick one? If you want to explain a character, do that, if you want to translate/analyze a song, do that. For March we can set up a more official challenge.

Totally agree on that offer! If we can, personally, I'll go for the character and try
explaining it (as well as my "opinion" on it) in Chinese!

Should we start talking about the March challenge now? So that we don't end up like this
(not knowing for sure mid-month) next month

How about for March we have a 'one hundred challenge', meaning you choose to do one hundred of anything you
choose which suits your level. For example you could learn 100 new characters, read 100 pages of a book etc. For
listening we could change it to 10 hours/episodes/films/podcasts, as 100 hours of listening might be a push in a
month! It would require you to be active throughout the month in order to complete the challenge, rather than
translating a song or writing an introduction (both of these are fantastic challenges, but can still be completed even
if you do no other language study for the whole month). Not the best suggestion I know, but it's an idea if needs
be!

NICE! Love your idea! Really! It's perfect. Fits any level, cannot be done in one go
(well someone crazy could go for 10straight hours of movies or episodes but where's the
fun :p), and it still gives a choice to everybody.

Please everybody, accept his idea! :)

I really like the idea of a 100 challenge, especially since it's highly customizable. For February i guess i'll just choose one of the two and post it in the next week.

I think I'd like to change my status in this group to observer, originally I had expected to switch over to Cantonese as my main focus of study in March, but now it's looking more like that won't happen til later on in the year.

Still continuing with my current routine of Cantonese study though, and hopefully I'll be a much more active participant come next year.

YnEoS: I'm hoping that's not a bad thing, that you just want to spend more time with other languages or other things that are important to you. I can't change your status, but good luck with your studies this year :)

So for February, we've got two choices:
1. Pick a character and explain it
2. Pick a song and translate it

The 100 challenge is nice, but i currently learn 100 characters every 4 days or so anyway. For me, 100 pages would be much more difficult, as would 100 news articles. I could try for 100 articles, though. We could also try to break it down into days/weeks, for example 5-10 a day, which would require you to be steadier throughout the month.

Here's the song i chose for the challenge. It's by the band 犯罪想法, you can listen to it here.

First, some of the new words:
滥用 (lan4 yong4) = to misuse, abuse
屠杀 (tu2 sha1) = to massacre
泄漏 (xie4 lou4) = to leak
爆炸 (bao4 zha4) = to explode
愚蠢 (yu2 chun3) = stupid, silly
灾难 (zai1 nan4) = disaster, catastrophe
洋洋得意 (yang2 yang2 de2 yi4) = immensely pleased with oneself

Now, the translated song:
滥用资源 屠杀动物 你们的文明与进步
misusing natural resources, massacring animals, your culture and progress

oil leaks, nuclear plant explosions, the environment is getting worse and worse

stupid humanity, stupid progress

bringing about disasters in exchange for suffering

why are you still so proud of yourself?

you're new garbage, new garbage
