¡Hola a todos! Me llamo Kevin y vivo en Colorado en Los Estados Unidos. En mi tiempo libre, me gusta ir a escalar,
dar unas caminatas, ir de campamento, esquiar y hacer snowboard, etc. Básicamente, soy un Coloradoan muy típico. :) Hace dos años, vivía en Bélgica, donde aprendí a hablar francés. Ahora quiero viajar por todas las partes en América Latina. Creo que iré en el marzo 2015, así que tengo un poco más de un año. Empecé a estudiar español hace tres meses. Me gusta la lenguaje más y más cada día. ¡Estoy emocionado de ver el progreso que hago este año, y también de ser parte de este equipo! Bueno, esta es la primera vez que escribo en español, y creo que es suficiente. :) ¡Encantado de conocerte todo! This is going to be tough, as I’ve been learning Spanish for a week only (literally). So, just ignore my egregious mistakes, will you? ;-)
Here’s my first attempt at writing in Spanish: ¡Hola! Me llamo Emme. Soy Italiana y vivo en el norte de Italia. Estudié lenguas y literatura en la Universidad. Los idiomas son mi hobby: hablo inglés, aleman y un poco de francés y de sueco. Estoy aprendiendo español desde hace una semana. Todavía no hablo español, pero lo entiendo bastante bien porque es un idioma similar al Italiano. En mi tiempo libre me gusta la lectura y el cine. 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

Emme - has aprendido ya un montón! Muy bien hecho. Lo que has escrito no tiene ningunos errores gramaticales
tampoco, al menos que yo vea. Pero me pregunto si debe de ser 'me gustan la lectura y el cine' ya que hay dos cosas allí que te gustan, pero no estoy seguro. Tal vez nuestro padrino puede aclarar esto para nosotros. Sigue así Emme! 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Soy Stephanie de Canadá. Tengo 35 años y soy profesora de francés. Estoy aprendiendo español desde hace ocho meses. En abril 2013, mi padre me preguntó si quería acompañarlo en España para hacer el camino de Santiago. Dije sí, y entonces empecé a aprender español un mes más tarde. Me encanta este idioma, y quiero seguir aprendiéndolo y practicándolo por muchos años. Empezamos nuestro camino el 15 de marzo, y vamos a caminar 800 kilómetros en seis semanas. ¡Es muy emocionante! Vivo en un pueblo muy pequeño, desgraciadamente muy lejos de mi familia. Sólo hay 1800 personas que viven aquí. No hay nadie que hable español - pero tenemos muchas vacas. Vivo con mi marido y nuestro perro. No tenemos hijos, pero no hay ningún problema, porque mi perro está convencido de que esté una persona. Me gustan leer, dar paseos, viajar y escribir (pero no en español). ¡Estoy muy contenta de poder aprender con vosotros este año! The irony is neither had you... except when you mentioned mistakes -- agreement is OK, but in Spanish you should have used the singular: 'no mistakes' -> 'ningún error' (You may want to think about it in terms of 'mistakes? not even one' ;)
OK, let's have a go at it --BTW and for the record I'm not entirely happy with the linked article--. Whenever you have several things you like, if one or more are in the plural, it's 'gustan', period. If you mention individual, countable things, and there's more than one, it's 'gustan' too -- f.e. 'me gustan el vestido rojo y ese sombrero'. So far, so good, right? The trickiest part is discussing uncountable stuff that may be referred to as wholes, f.e. music. If you want to say 'I like music', by which I understand that you like ALL kinds of music, then in Spanish it's 'me gusta LA música', which turns it into ONE thing (the whole). If you add a second, grammatically singular whole like the first, then we are back to square one: use 'gustan'. Example: 'me gustan la música y el cine'. Why is this tricky? Because when you deal with really uncountable stuff, actions are especially good examples, then the singular must be used regardless of how many things are being referred to. Examples: 'me gusta pasear', 'me gusta pasear y quedar con mis amigos'. Then, there's the all-in, all-out fun part of exact wording -- all agreement systems tend to take more into account what you actually say rather than what you mean, so it's 'me gusta pasear' but 'me gustan los paseos', 'me gusta la ropa' and 'me gustan los trajes', because stuff can be [un]countable depending on how you refer to it. Just a word of warning. Finally, if you mix 'gustar' subjects that conflict trying to impose singular and plural, always make sure 'gustar' agrees with the first one and you'll be elegantly avoiding 99.9% of possible mistakes. Example: 'me gustan los perritos y pasear', 'me gusta pasear y los perritos'. I guess we could summarize this saying that you should use 'gustan' if you're really sure about the count and it exceeds one, and use 'gusta' otherwise, because even if you get it wrong, most natives won't notice it anyway. Just please don't do it in front of me, I don't want to cry in public ;) -- I'll go on with other corrections after lunch, but given how much 'work' has piled up in the last few days, I think I'll limit myself to recasting stuff in a correct /more natural way, and I'll reserve longer explanations for those who request further clarifications. @Spanky if you 'hear' me, I tried twice to leave a note in your PM inbox to say thank you, but I got a message saying it's full both times, so this will have to suffice for now ;) 5 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

¡Hola a todos! Soy Josh y vivo en Washington, DC. Soy estudiante de economía política. Tengo una
maestría y en Septiembre voy a empezar un PhD. Así que los idiomas son muy importantes para mi. Una otra razon para estudiar español especificamenete es que mi esposa es de Ecuador :) En mi tiempo libre me gusta leer (filosofía, economía, y literatura clasica), jugar y ver el fútbol (prefiero la liga española), y viajar :) No se que mas decir. ¡Gracias! Let’s say I’m pretty good at editing what I write and looking up things in textbooks and grammars. But I’m happy it wasn’t a total disaster. To all the other beginners I’d like to remember one thing, though. It’s unfair to compare my skills in Spanish to those of a real beginner whose native language is not Italian.
