And since that is the limit of what I can attempt in German right now I will add, in English,
I would be interested to find out more about German children's songs.

...vielleich was von

Vielleicht
finde ich irgendetwas drin.

Re: Song Challenge

There is currently a German-language film festival where I live and so today I did see the documentary I mentioned above. It was great! It contained amazing music from a lot of different regions and very memorable and touching personal accounts recalling the misuse of folk music under the Nazi and East German dictatorships. Parts were very funny, too. If it is available to you, it's really worth watching.

Here is a link to the film's website:
Sound of Heimat

The song from the film that I first selected to learn was "Die Gedanken sind frei". I was going to translate it, but there are numerous versions of the lyrics and a number of the ones I found had a translation next to it. It's pretty simple and after you've heard it a couple of times, you've basically learned most of it.   It has a lot of political meaning, in relation to freedom of thought and has played a part in German history, for example in the Scholl family, active in the resistance to the Nazis. You may wish to look up Sophie Scholl if you don't already know about her. It was also (I believe) sung in the churches of the DDR in the Monday demonstrations that led to the fall of the Berlin wall.

A very cool modern take on the song:
Modern Die Gedanke sind frei

Traditional version
Traditional Die Gedanke sind frei

From Goethe Institute: Podcast 54 on the site below includes teaching the lyrics, and some instructional material on the meaning of the song. It's just slightly silly at times, not too bad. It even has a PDF download of the transcript so you can read along or sing along.

GoetheInstitut-Die Gedanke sind frei

Instead I'm going to try and translate a different song, "Morgen muss ich fort von hier", a really beautiful song. I think I'll probably put that on my own log. I think I've already taken up enough space here...

Edit: I just realized I wrote Gedanke in the links everywhere above instead of Gedanken (sorry, I'm a bit tired...)

Phew, so relieved. I started catching up from page 7 and thought people were speaking about a singing challenge.

I'll probably learn something through lyricstraining :-)
