I'm still reading 茶の本 (The Book of Tea) but I've realised that it's way above my level
as a reader. However, I am finding it useful to make myself sit down and work through it sentence by sentence. The vocabulary I get out of it isn't likely to be of much use at my level (禁欲主義, anyone?) but having to work to work out the kanji so that I can then look up the word online is helping me internalise the kanji themselves. So I'm going to carry on working through this book, although I recognise that I won't have got very far with it by the time I have to return it. I was going to go back and edit my April goals to allow myself to count 20m with this book as fulfilling the requirements for that day's NHK News. However, on reflection, I think I'm going to leave things as they are. NHK News is difficult, but it is everyday Japanese that I will have to be able to cope with easily, in the not too distant future. 茶の本 seems to be, at least at the moment, quite a bit more advanced than that. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||||||||

禁欲主義 might not seem immediately useful to you, but the ～主義 suffix is quite useful for adding a few more advanced vocabulary words to your vocabulary:

I do already have 主義 and 民主主義 in my Anki deck and 主義 does seem to form quite a few
words (共産党 cropped up in NHK News so I might have recognised 共産主義 if it cropped up). I still think that all of those will crop up in a conversation before 禁欲主義 does :-) I would like to be able to hang on to the book longer so that I can work further through it, but comparing it to (for example) the Penguin short stories, it does seem to require somewhat more of this reader. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||||||||

I'm working slowly through the anime 凪のあすから, using Japanese subs to work out what is
being said and then watching scenes a number of times. Then I go looking for useful vocabulary to SRS and then watch the scene again. This means that a 20m episode might take a few hours to work through. At the end I can watch the episode without subtitles and catch more of what is being said, although it's still very far from perfect (or even "good"). So I'm also, in parallel as it were, watching other things without subtitles. Currently it's さらい屋五葉 but I think I want to try drama again for my non-intensive watching, as that's more likely to be helpful for the JLPT I'd think. I'm really looking forward to the day when I can watch these again with no subtitles and actually know what's going on without working hard at it :-) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||||||||

I've been extracting subs and audio from MKV files so I should record how I did that somewhere
before I forget. To see what lives in which track:

I've listened to the Lower Intermediate Dialogues enough times now that I can predict which
one is coming next. So I've switched the MP3 player to use "shuffle", so that now I can't rely on knowing what's about to pop up. So far it's going well. The unpredictability is keeping me more focussed. I've also put the soundtracks for the first 5 episodes of 凪のあすから onto my MP3 player. I've only worked through the first two episodes and I'm currently going through the third one, so I only have a vague idea of what the accompanying scenes are supposed to be, but I'm still managing to pick up a little of what is going on. So I think I'll try using other soundtracks this way in the future. I've nearly completed my second pass through 新完全マスター N3 聴解. The dialogues do seem to be much clearer now than they were the first time through. Obviously, that will partly be because I've heard them all before, but I think that the listening I've been doing to the various dramas and anime has helped too. I've been ignoring grammar for the last week or so and working on 聴解 instead.
I've finished my second pass through the 新完全マスター book. This time it took 10h20m of studying to work through the book. I'm now starting to listen to the first CD during my commute to see how much of it makes any sort of sense without the book in front of me. I also plan to work through the book one more time, making sure I understand the text fully and that understand what the incorrect answers mean too. I finished watching さらい屋五葉 just a few days ago. I think I'll stick to dramas rather
than anime for the moment and I'll avoid anything set too far in the past. Hopefully that will lead to simpler language. I'm now up to episode 8 of エジソンの母, which is proving both reasonably interesting and also fairly straightforward to follow. That's just as well as episode 8 had no subtitles at all! I'm not abandoning 凪のあすから though. I'm going to import the decks that subs2srs has made for me for the first 5 episodes and see if working through those makes the episodes easier to watch without any subtitles at all. I'll do this in parallel with whatever drama I'm watching at the time. 1 person has voted this message useful |
