Hi all!
I'm starting Persian from scratch after being amazed by how charming it sounds! Right now I'm organising my study, looking for resources and preparing a roadmap in order to achieve my goal for January 2015, or at least arriving next to: being able to read and write the script, understand the general meanings of non highly specialised texts and being able to have basic conversations with natives. As a first lesson I listened the episode 1 of Chai and Conversation podcast. I will try to listen one episode per day, if needed twice a day or two days in a row before continue and in the next days starting from today I will start playing with the beautiful script. My main concern is to prepare a study plan that is sustainable, considering that I work as software engineer at least 8 hours a day and I have two language to maintain (English and French) and three to study actively (Dutch, Persian and Mandarin). Progress not too fast is acceptable to me, but my challenge is to commit myself for success. The reward is so high that it would be a pity not to get it (I mean, access to Persian language and culture, other than the objectives with the other languages). Ok, after several technical problems, now I have my logbook for Persian TAC14 listed on my profile :)
In the last days my first concern was to organise myself to start. I looked for resources, I asked for advices to how to start. Meanwhile, I started with Pimsleur and Chai and Conversation. I did 1 from Pimsleur and 3 from Chai and Conversation. The third episode I will study also tomorrow because it his faster than Pimsleur and presents both the formal and informal forms since the beginning, while Pimsleur uses only the formal form. About Pimsleur, unfortunately, I found only 10 episodes, so I will study with these and meanwhile I continue with Chai and Conversation. The most immediate thing I need to focus on is writing. One resource that has been advised to me is this book. I will try to use this one for the writing, than I will decide if continue to use this one or switch to a different one (assimil? living persian?). As general rule, when I will be to write sentences in Persian, I will switch to Persian (like I'm doing with Dutch). Today I learnt how to write my first 3 letters (alef, be and nun) and the numbers (but not the names of them).
I also listened Chai and Conversation ep.2 and I'm ready to pickup the ep.3 tomorrow. I eventually listened Pimsleur Farsi ep.2. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Today the Chai and Conversation ep. 3 was really clear to me, and I think I can continue, but to better fix in my
mind what I learnt, I'll listen the same lesson also tomorrow. I also exercised myself to write numbers (I didn't actually remember how to write the numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9) and the letters alef, be and nun. Now I'm going out but if I don't come back home too late I will also listen the ep.2 of Pimsleur Farsi. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I listened Pimsleur ep.3, all fine, but all this 'men kami farsi mifehman' and 'shoma farsi mifehmin?' is pretty boring
hehehe. I really need to speed up things, anyway, most of all when I study Dutch. When I will come back to work a perfect organisation of my daily language learning routine is ALL. Now I'm also taking long time with farsi because I cannot use dead moments (no travel, no driving, no even walks to put listening into). It will be good for this but of course I need to put the various part in the timeline just as I would do with Lego bricks :) Today also I wrote down the numbers and alef, be and nun but from tomorrow I need to add other characters to my persian alphabet. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Great to see that you're already studying! I wish I could say the same for myself, but I have a thesis to finish first... The second week of January, however, will be full of Persian :)

After some day of trial, having to deal with the active study of 3 languages and having to allocate time for each one,
this is my current daily time schedule with associated action plans: - Dutch: 20-30 minutes of reading and reverse engineering of the language reading the book "Het Chalet"; 20-30 minutes of listening news podcast. Goal: finishing the book. - Persian, 15-30 minutes of audio learning, 20-30 minutes with studying with easypersian. Goal: finishing easypersian. - Mandarin: 15-30 minutes learning characters using Heisig, 20-30 minutes FSI. Goal: go until the end of the two resources. By calculations, working all the days, it's possible to reach the goals in a time between 4 and 6 months. More realistically, this can require 8 to 12 months. Considering that the golden rule to me is to do "at least something" with all the languages everyday, the minimum amount of time, daily, is 50 minutes while the maximum is 3 hours. Let say that 1 hour is possible to do it during dead time (maximum of 2 extra hours). I wonder if my brain is able to face this amount of work. 1 person has voted this message useful |
