How long do you use Anki when learning a particular language? Personally I would only use it at the start. I can see arguments for using it throughout language learning, but for me it's too boring after a certain point.

It is boring but efficient. I find it more useful later during the learning or rather during all the stages. When I am already intermediate or advanced, I want to actively use vocabulary that I cannot encounter enough times in my books, tv series and so on. It is not weird vocabulary noone knows, it is not vocabulary I wouldn't understand. It is just vocabulary I have little chance to make readily prepared in brain for immediate active use without srs. Without srs, the gap between my active and passive vocabulary is much wider than necesary. Therefore I don't use this potential and instead use the more basic words and hate myself for it :-)
I think my views on vocabulary are quite opposite from those of most learners. It is easy in the beginning. You meet the words so many times. The same words come in all the courses and most of them a bit later in most books, tv series and so on. It's easy to learn them. And I have quite a good memory, further trained by university, compared to many learners. But later, that's where it gets harder for me, especially due to my ego. I want to use the most appropriate words possible, I can't settle for the first few thousands words once I count myself fluent. It is a flaw of character, such a pride, isn't it? :-D :-D :-D The only language giving me enough input even for "weird" words is English but it is highly unlikely I could simulate the same situation for any other of my L2s 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||||||||

That makes sense, if I was less lazy I would probably use SRS too.
There are estimates (for what they are worth) in the literature that you need to encounter a word 10-20 times before it becomes active. For high frequency words, the sort you need to know early on, you'll easily encounter these that many times as you start read. However, the low frequency words may only come up once every few hundred pages if at all. So I can see why SRS is useful for learning these. EMK uses it for a similar reason doesn't he? I don't know, I think he uses sentence cards but I'm not sure.

Oh, Gemuse, there is no need for such strong emotions :-D (but I still appreciate you didn't use the meme "kill it with fire" instead ;-) )
So, what has Cavesa been up to during the last week or two? 1. French grammar review: over 30 doublepages of Grammaire Progressive, mostly intermediare. Why the easy level? Because I want to use the old book, review the easy stuff, not to have any gap on the higher level review. There is really nothing difficult for me, just a few tiny gaps I knew from native input only and therefore not that actively. (I mean, I don't make mistakes in the matter. I don't use the grammatical feature, connector or whatever at all because there is an alternative I am more used to. But I want my speech and writing to be more colourful, therefore I need to know all the alternatives) There were a few points I hate my old teachers for making that obscure (If I could make a language related "law", I would forbid teachers to say things like "this is complicated grammar" or to avoid explaining the needed grammar because of the perceived difficulty) :-D Really, my main trouble with learning French during the last 15 years are too many changes. I was forced to restart several times, I was bored at times, too many teachers were demotivating and my classmates even more. And I hadn't started properly learning on my own until a few years ago and sometimes without much of a system. Really, learning my newer languages is much easier. -About my "trouble points" mentioned earlier: I usually know the grammar, I just don't feel sure when writing due to second guessing myself and due to gaps in my solid grammar base. But I can never praise consumation of huge amounts of native input enough! 2. First meeting with my new French tutor-preparation for exams. A native speaker with, supposedly, lots of experience. I like him, he appears to be capable in teaching what I want to be taught. Despite first claims "the tasks are not meaningless", after some speaking and checking my overall level, he found they were too easy for me. So, we are going to speak a lot, pick all the details (I am sure he will finally find some mistakes next time, when he tunes his "correction sixth sense" for the finer points) and so on. I will do most of the work on my own, hopefully, he will prove to be the deciding asset to the speaking part of the exams preparation. What exams do I want to sit, next year (2015)? DALF C1, state exam C1 (a stupid prerequisite for the next one which cannot be substituted by dalf), state exam C2 in translation or whatever are the official translations of the exams' names. I need the translation paper to have much easier time finding jobs. And some for other languages as well. 3.German! I am going slowly through Klipp und Klar and coming back to Themen Aktuell. It's time to finally finish the last one and half lesson. But the grammar is continuing well, it is really logical. Other than that: Reading, reading, reading for the ASCR. School has started and so on. And I want to finally put all those long promised things into my log. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

My first diary entry, 31 of June or 1st of July, not sure. I can see some of my mistakes I couldn't see at the moment, there is an accidentally unfinished sentence and so on. nothing miraculous :-D The other ones are still right from the beginning. Tons of grammar mistakes, wrong ortograph and so on. Really a lot! :-D

ASCR:
+1 French movie, episodes 6 and 7 of the newest Profilage season +4 French books: M.Robert-La Malerune 2:Le Dire des Sylfes +5 English books: R.E.Feist: Darkness at Sethanon Others: German: quite nothing French: some grammar, a lesson with my tutor with lots of speaking but only two mistakes corrected. first two assignments were too easy. However, I'll be surely able to get the level up a bit. Sadly, having a tutor makes me lazier. Subconsciously, I am getting down to the pace required of me instead of racing forward on my own.
