Spanish: About three hours of conversation this week, felt a little clunkier
than what I'm used to, but the good part is I don't think I'm lacking for practice partners. Reading is slow but very enjoyable, I might have to pick up a lighter read to hit 10 books this year. Skype - (5/100) TV - (10/100) Texts - (2/100) Mandarin:Listening to Pimsleur 17 today, lessons were quite hard. Still enjoying Office girls, wrote a short text, but I probably won't be speaking with anyone for a bit, my listening comprehension needs work to have a conversation. French: I spoke French with someone for the first time last week, and it went great! My vocabulary is obviously lacking and I sometimes accidentally use a word or two of Spanish, but I've spoken 2.5 hours of French this week without getting stuck or switching to English. This morning was a little more difficult than the other two times, but overall I am quite pleased with progress. Assimil(51/2) Second round with Michel Thomas Advanced Listened to first 3 Units of FSI Phonology Almost done with 3rd keyhole on Duolingo Watched a couple movies, La Fée and La reine des pommes. My plan has changed a little bit, I think I´ll continue with and Assimil/FSI combination and maybe wait on Pimsleur. I'd rather not finish the rest of Duolingo this month, maybe the end of February. Spanish:Still hate writing, lots of podcasts this week.
Skype - (7/100) TV - (13/100) Texts - (3/100) Mandarin:On lesson 20 of PIII. I also recall hating level III of Spanish, but it's really stupid to teach "I'm hungry" and "I'm thirsty" 75 lessons in, after "All the employees of the international department will be at the post-meeting reception. Do you need a microphone?" Almost there, though, I'll just keep on rotating through audio courses like Teach Yourself, Assimil, and FSI. French: FSI Unit 2.5 - Much harder than I was expecting but repetition gets it done. Assimil(56/7)- Still not so bad, but I'm pretty lenient on the translation. Duolingo - Started using my phone, sort of godsend for English typos that were killing me. Just finished Communication(6/6) after last keyhole. Watched Buffy contre les vampires immediately after Buffy cazavampiros, helps with comprehension and separating Spanish from French. About 5 hours total of conversation, and I feel miles ahead of where I was with Spanish 5 lessons in. Time flies, but I feel like I'll be a B1 by June. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Spanish:One month in, I'd say I'm a little unsatisfied with my progress in
Spanish. I really enjoy reading and listening to podcasts, and that's mostly what I've done this month. Since it's my first month with French I've more or less let Spanish be my fun advanced language, but I need to speak and write a bit more. Really like reading El paraíso en la otra esquina. Skype - (8/100) TV - (15/100) Texts - (3/100) Mandarin:PIII lesson 25. Maybe I was a bit bored this week, but I spent more time on Mandarin and more stuff started to click when listening. Did some Lingq beginner lessons, watched some youtube, lots of memrise. etc. French: FSI 4.1 Assimil 60/11 Not much duolingo, but three more hours of conversation. I always do my lessons just after I wake up, and both my brain and my mouth need about 15 minutes to warm up before I get into the groove. Currently reading/listening to 1001 nuits, really good stuff if not a little above my level. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Spanish: Same as last week, reading and podcasts, not enough actual studying.
Started Breve Historia de Al-Andalus, about 20% done with that, really fun stuff. Skype - (8/100) TV - (17/100) Texts - (3/100 Mandarin: Finally finished Pimsleur, though I might give it another listen later. Also finished Rutgers L1 course on Lingq. Still mostly feel like a beginner, but I think I might start Assimil at 1 lesson a day until I hit the active wave. At least for French, the difficulty ramped up pretty quickly but is quite funny. French: FSI 4.5 Assimil 65/14 3 hours speaking several podcasts, thanks to everyone back at the main 2ème thread for the recommendations. I'm enjoying Au coeur de l'histoire. 1001 is a pleasure to read, nice little chunks of stories that are never that long. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

The Mandarin Assimil course is ok, just be warned that it starts off suuuuper slow, like:
你.........[insert 5 seconds].........好.................................... 你....................................好.................. ..................吗？ It speeds up a little later, but is still pretty slow at the end. It is a bit more conversational than most other beginner's courses i've seen, though, which is nice. Anyway, it looks like you're making good progress. Luckily, none of the Assimil lessons are all that long, I just listened to the first 18
or so without much difficulty. Once I start missing stuff I'll slow down, but like you said, it is super slow. Is there another course you'd recommend? With Spanish, it's mostly the passive/active difference. I have no problem consuming media and keeping Spanish a part of my daily life, but pushing myself to keep speaking and writing hasn't been as successful. I search for phrases more than I used to, etc. Not a huge deal, but something to keep an eye out for. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Skype - (10/100) TV - (18/100) Texts(4/100) 50%done with Al-Andalus, really fast and fun read so far; about 33% done with the Llosa. I was a little worried about hitting my targets with reading, but these titles from Nowtilus Breve Historia series are exactly what I need: easy enough to read and interesting to adults. Mandarin Assimil got much harder, but I managed to listen enough to reach lesson 33. Lots of grammar in there that I was familiar with but had to read the description a couple times to get it. FrenchFinished my first Tintin (le secret de la licorne), finished Tome 1 of 1001 Nights, 3 hours with tutors and lots of history podcasts this week. Duolingo is slow and steady, but I am never really excited about it. Thinking about hitting the grammar books and learning rules from someone other than Michel Thomas and Assimil. Skype - (11/100) TV - (19/100) Texts(5/100) Mandarin Assimil Lesson 49, the content is considerably less interesting than French, but not bad overall. I probably won't follow the Assimil method with the active wave, I prefer shadowing/repeating while I walk to lunch and back. French Turns out there was a lot more of Tome 1, I'm only on night 20/150. Still lots of fun, even if it's filled with literary French that isn't all that current. Reading more Tintin, 3 hours with tutors, lots of podcasts, etc. Didn't get around to any formal grammar study, might do another round with Michel Thomas Advanced this week. Assimil is just a chore lately, I suppose that's the disadvantage of going through it so quickly, the content gets stale. It turns out I really prefer audio-only courses as well. Audio courses + memrise for vocab + reading native materials seems to be my preferred method for now. FSI: 6.2 Assimil: 75/20 1 person has voted this message useful |
