Day 1

Spanish

The continuing education course in Spanish taken last fall used Barron’s E-Z
Spanish
book, not awful as a learning resource for class use, but not the best for
self-learners as there is no accompanying audio. We worked up to the end of Work Unit
11 in class. The teacher was a fairly accomplished educator from Venezuela, who by the
end of the tenth class seemed utterly defeated by our lack of progress.

Today I started reviewing what we had learned, and entering vocab and sentences into
Anki for what I hope will become a daily habit of Anki review.

Worked through all the Lecciones preparatorias (just thematic vocabulary dumps
at the beginning of the text), comprised of the following:
-     La casa
-     Una oficina
-     Los alimentos
-     Acciones
-     Descripciones
(contrasting adjectives)
-     El cuerpo humano

as well as working through and Anki-izing Work Unit 1 (¿Qué es más importante?).
Each work unit is based around a dialogue, following by a list of new words
(palabras nuevas
), exercises (ejercicios) and then a grammar point
(estructuras de la lengua – in this unit, the noun and definite article) and
then more ejercicios.

Spoiler alert in terms of the dialogue in this unit: it turns out that in comparison to
studying, la telenovela “El Amor y la passion” es más importante.

Also, reviewed Michel Thomas Spanish for Beginners, Disc 1 (I had previously worked
through all ten discs quite a number of times, so this just for a refresher and to get
some easy momentum going).

Day 1

American Sign Language

Reviewed some youtube videos, and settled on the following to start learning
fingerspelling.   youtube - alphabet,
numbers

Worked on the alphabet, numbers up to ten and some three letter fingerspelling
recognition practice.

Kanji

A generous sample of Heisig’s 6th edition of Remembering the Kanji is provided by the
author or publisher at:

Heisig,
Remembering the kanji

Errata are saved elsewhere, I will post later.

I had previously worked through a number of these, though they need refreshing. Today
worked on items #1 through 25 including reminding myself of proper stroke order, and
made up paper flash cards. All were very well recognized, given that this is about my
6th sailing made on the early Heisig waters….

Day 2

Spanish

More work with previously-studied units from E-Z Spanish:
Work unit 2 - ¿Adónde queremos vivir? and plural forms of nouns and definite
articles
Work unit 3 - ¿Qué necesitas tú para ser feliz? and present indicative tense of
the regular ‘-ar’ verbs.

Michel Thomas, Disc Dos for review.

ASL

Awesome fingerspelling recognition practice site: asl.ms

One can adjust the speed quite a bit – I am able to read with relative comfort at the
slowest speed. I figure I will be hanging around here a while.   Worked today on three
letter words, slowest speed, still had to repeat many of them before getting the word.

Kanji

#26 through 37

Day 3

Spanish

Work unit 4 - ¿Quién es más fuerte? and present indicative for regular ‘-er’
and ‘-ir’ verbs.

I am not entirely sure whether this particular dialogue will be of use to me in the
future, expect to the extent I may need to describe how a princess or any other worthy
soul rompe el brazo de un gigante y muerde a otro.

Also Michel Thomas, Disc 3 and part of Disc 4

ASL

more practice at same site as yesterday: asl.ms

Japanese kanji – Taking yet another hopeless stab at getting through the kanji,
per Heisig’s Remembering the Kanji.   I got through a couple of hundred
previously.    I would like to have solidly internalized 1000 of them by year’s end. I
figure 15 – 30 minutes per day should get me there, and I can pick up the back half of
the collection the following year.

I started on RTK back in 2011. I was doing maybe 10 per day for a while and then slowly sped up over a month or two
to 20/day. Then I read lots of forum posts about people managing the whole thing in a few months and so I went a
little wild. I shot up to 50/day and then even over 100/day towards the end. My retention rate the next day was
maybe 50% but within a few weeks that was up to a healthy 90% or so.

In the end, through using Reviewing The Kanji I managed to get through the 2042
kanji in RTK1 in about 5 months or so. I'm now in maintenance mode, so i do maybe 10 minutes each day reviewing the
40 or so kanji it throws at me. (I find it helps to write out each kanji, admittedly somewhat scruffily). Right now
I have only 26 cards in the "one review" bucket and 1859 in the "4+ reviews" bucket. So the method works for me
(although some people just hate it).

My advice would be to blast through it at whatever rate you feel happy with and let the SRS algorithm keep throwing
the ones you get wrong back at you. As long as you don't worry about the initial failure rate, you'll find that they
do stick quite quickly.

I'd also suggest setting yourself a time limit for reviews and not worrying too much about getting everything done
every single day.

Thanks dampingwire, much appreciated!   I recall Brun Ugle and others previously
recommending the Reviewing the Kanji website to me, and my impression in the past was
that it was mostly a source of alternate "stories" for each kanji, which had not
particularly been a problem for me in the past.   But I have taken a look again just now
on your recommendation and see it is quite a bit more, so I have signed up.    I agree
entirely by the way about writing out each kanji - I do this invariably, and invariably
in a super scruffy manner.

I am not super stressed about the speed with which I get through the kanji.   I intend
it, for this year, just to be a casual stroll and not allow it to become too much of a
distraction (always a problem for me!) from what I intend my main language of interest
for the first half of the year, Spanish.

exploring the Remembering the Kanji website, first pass through lessons 1, 2, and 3.
Slightly out of sync with Heisig’s 6th edition. I believe I worked previously through
the 5th edition, and I am noticing just a few new kanji being worked in early in the
sequence in the 6th compared to the 5th editions.
