I can't imagine living at one place for a couple of years (or even for a couple of months, for that matter) and not learning the language (at least the basics). I would feel like I am missing out on all the fun, wasting a great opportunity to learn a new language, talk to the people coming from the country I am living in etc.
That said, it is my approach, my philosophy of life, my priorities, my idea of what is fun and what is not, what is important in daily life and communication. And I really try not to forget that there are other people out there, with other priorities and ideas for their lives. They might be perfectly comfortable with their expat bubble, for whatever reason. It doesn't really bother me (as long as they don't say something like 'why doesn't everyone just speak English here, this would be much more practical' or 'oh, I would LOVE to speak the language of the country but it is SO hard to learn it that I won't even try'). After all, it is their choice, and this might be the best choice for THEM. 3 persons have voted this message useful |
